Job description

About this role

You’ve designed car parts just for the fun of it. Now do it for a living.

Racing Sport Concepts designs carbon fiber aero and body parts for some of the most exciting performance cars on the road. Our customers notice every line, gap and edge, and so do we. We’re a small studio in Johnstown, OH, and we’re looking for one person: a designer who lives and breathes cars and wants their ideas on real cars, at real shows, in front of real enthusiasts.

Fair warning: this is not a typical job post. We’re looking for a rare combination, and if it’s you, you’ll know by the end of this page.

What the job really is

You’ll be the on-site right hand of our President on new product development. He sets the direction and brings plenty of ideas. You turn them into reality, and you bring ideas of your own.

One day you’re scanning a car. The next you’re reviewing renderings from a contract artist, sorting out a fitment problem with a sculptor, or holding a fresh 3D print up to a fender to see if the line is right.

A typical week might include

  • Laser scanning a car or part with our Creaform HandySCAN
  • Organizing scan data and project files so anyone can find anything, fast
  • Sending scan data to a contractor for cleanup, then checking what comes back
  • Working with our rendering and surfacing contractors to bring a concept to life
  • Doing quick design work and fixes in Rhino yourself
  • Printing prototypes in-house and test-fitting them on real cars
  • Photographing problems and writing short, clear notes so the remote team knows exactly what to fix
  • Pitching your own ideas for new parts and making the case for them

You’re probably the one if

  • You’ve already designed car parts on your own time. Sketches, renders, CAD, 3D prints, a splitter you fabricated in your garage: show us. Honestly, if you haven’t done this for fun, this probably isn’t your job.
  • Cars are your thing. You know why a ducktail works on one car and looks wrong on another.
  • You’re comfortable in Rhino, or another 3D tool you can show real work from, and you can handle small design jobs yourself
  • You follow through. Files get named, folders stay organized, deadlines get hit, and nobody has to chase you.
  • You can take direction and still bring your own opinions to the table
  • You can be on-site in Johnstown every day. Scanners, printers and cars don’t work remotely.

Bonus points

  • 3D scanning experience
  • Rendering in KeyShot, Blender or similar
  • Alias or Class-A surfacing experience
  • Industrial or transportation design education
  • 3D printing, composites, fabrication or bodywork
  • Show cars, motorsport, or a build of your own

What you get

  • $70,000–$95,000 to start, and we’ll go above that for exceptional talent. Show us why.
  • Performance bonuses
  • Paid time off and paid company holidays
  • A pay review at six months tied to clear goals
  • Your designs on parts that ship to enthusiasts around the world
  • Direct access to the decision-maker, and no layers between your idea and a prototype
  • A job that doesn’t feel like one, if you’re the right person
