Infrastructure Principal Engineer

Salary Range: $149k to $184k

Position Overview

A technology-focused organization supporting U. S. government and national security programs is seeking an experienced Infrastructure Principal Engineer to join its Infrastructure team.

This position will be responsible for designing, deploying, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise infrastructure and private cloud environments across multiple locations and compliance environments.

The ideal candidate brings extensive hands-on experience with technologies such as VMware, Linux, Windows, OpenShift, and Kubernetes, along with a strong background in infrastructure automation, troubleshooting, security, documentation, and technical leadership.

The Infrastructure Principal Engineer will work closely with infrastructure, engineering, DevOps, security, and end-user teams to develop reliable, scalable, secure, and high-performing technology solutions.

Security Clearance

An active DoD Secret clearance or higher is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise infrastructure systems and private cloud platforms supporting custom applications and DevOps environments.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure utilizing technologies including VMware, Linux, Windows, OpenShift, and Kubernetes.
  • Support infrastructure and compute requirements across multiple locations and compliance environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex infrastructure issues escalated from service desk and technical support teams.
  • Develop automation solutions to streamline infrastructure administration, configuration management, monitoring, and recurring operational tasks.
  • Monitor infrastructure performance and evaluate the effectiveness of deployed systems and automation.
  • Design and implement solutions that improve system performance, capacity, availability, reliability, and scalability.
  • Develop, implement, oversee, and test security controls, including access authentication, system recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Partner with users and technical stakeholders to understand requirements and design appropriate infrastructure solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to infrastructure and support team members.
  • Develop, maintain, and update technical documentation supporting infrastructure operations, security requirements, and Authorization to Operate (ATO) packages.
  • Identify opportunities to improve infrastructure processes, standardization, automation, and operational efficiency.
  • Perform additional infrastructure and engineering responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional IT, systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, or related technical experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience deploying, administering, or maintaining infrastructure technologies, including one or more of the following:
  • VMware
  • Linux
  • Windows Server
  • OpenShift
  • Kubernetes
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance or higher.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise infrastructure, virtualization, operating systems, private cloud environments, and configuration management.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure and systems issues.
  • Experience supporting secure or regulated technology environments.
  • Strong organizational and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship due to government contract requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of technical lead or team lead experience.
  • CompTIA Security+ certification.
  • Experience configuring, administering, or managing enterprise storage appliances and storage infrastructure.
  • Professional or vendor certifications related to:
  • Linux
  • VMware
  • Red Hat OpenShift
  • Kubernetes
  • Microsoft Windows / Windows Server
  • Experience supporting Authorization to Operate (ATO) documentation or government compliance environments.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation, configuration management, and DevOps practices.
