Job description

About this role

Pono, LLC - Utah County, Utah (Remote)

Salary: $60,000-$70,000 annually, commensurate on qualifications and test results.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Mountain Time

Location: Remote. Candidates must live within commuting distance of Springville, Utah for occasional in-person meetings.

About the Position

We are a privately owned group of small businesses looking for an experienced, dependable person to help oversee our accounting, compliance, and general business operations.

This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys keeping things organized, solving problems, and making sure things get done correctly.

Our businesses have local managers responsible for daily activities. This position supports those managers with matters that require additional financial, administrative, or management experience. Most of the work is done by phone, email, and Slack with our managers, accountants, and vendors.

We use AI-assisted bookkeeping for routine entry; this position owns the accuracy of what it produces.

We're looking for someone who can work independently, exercise good judgment, and take responsibility without needing constant supervision.

Responsibilities

Accounting and Financial Oversight

  • Review each business day's automated transaction and payment activity in QuickBooks Online by close of business the following day, confirming entries are complete, correctly categorized, and reconciled, and handling any transactions the automation misses or flags.
  • Prepare and review quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee bookkeeping accuracy across multiple small companies.
  • Review bank reconciliations, accounts payable, receivables, and general ledger accounts.
  • Identify and correct accounting discrepancies.
  • Coordinate with outside accountants and tax professionals.
  • Verify financial reports rather than simply accepting submitted numbers.

Compliance and Administration

  • Track business licenses, annual filings, registrations, and other compliance requirements.
  • Manage insurance renewals, obtain competitive quotes, compare coverage, and recommend or approve options within established limits.
  • Maintain corporate records and important business documents.
  • Coordinate with vendors, accountants, and service providers.

Business Operations

  • Support local managers with issues beyond their authority or experience.
  • Independently resolve routine operational and administrative problems.
  • Make decisions within established authority.
  • Follow through on projects and problems until they are resolved.
  • Keep ownership informed of important developments without requiring involvement in routine matters.

How We

Work

This is a remote position with a regular 9-to-5 schedule. We don't track hours or watch screens; we measure performance by deadlines, responsiveness, and availability.

Availability means being reachable by phone, email, and Slack throughout the 9-to-5 workday. Appointments, time off, and other absences are fine with advance notice; unexplained unavailability for hours at a time is not, and we treat it as a serious matter.

Some deadlines are daily. Most of our routine transaction and payment entry is automated, but the books are only as good as the person watching them. Each business day's activity must be reviewed and confirmed by close of business the next business day, with any exceptions, miscategorized entries, or missed transactions corrected at that time.

Periodic hands-on transaction work will be needed when the automation doesn't cover something. The standard is that the books are never more than a day behind and never silently wrong.

Other deadlines are monthly and quarterly: closes delivered on time, compliance deadlines met, and prompt replies to our managers, accountants, and ownership during business hours.

The position begins with a 90-day paid evaluation period. During that time you'll run your first daily cycles, monthly closes, and compliance deadlines, and we'll both have a clear view of whether this is the right fit.

Qualifications

  • Strong accounting and bookkeeping background.
  • Experience preparing financial statements and closing accounting periods.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
  • Comfortable working with AI-assisted and automated accounting tools, and skeptical enough to check their work.
  • Previous experience managing administrative or operational responsibilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working with different personalities and making decisions.
  • Ability to manage several businesses and competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to work remotely and self-manage; prior remote experience preferred.

The Right Fit

We're looking for an experienced professional who values stability, independence, and a consistent work schedule.

Someone who enjoys being the person others count on, takes pride in doing things right, and appreciates a long-term position with a small group of businesses.

This is an established, hands-on role, not a corporate management track. We're looking for someone who enjoys this kind of work and wants to make it their own for years to come.
