About this role
About Us
Onyx Paving Company is a full-service asphalt and concrete paving contractor serving Southern California since 1990. We’re part of the Onyx | Advantage Group, a family-led group of six companies covering paving, pavement rehab, asphalt emulsions, oil spreading, trucking, and recycled materials. We’ve grown fast, and we’re building an accounting team that can keep up.
About the Role
This is a hands-on accounting role across several related companies. You won’t just post entries and check boxes at month-end. A big part of the job is figuring out why the numbers don’t agree and fixing it: tracing a reconciling item back to its source, sorting out an intercompany balance that doesn’t match, or reworking a reconciliation until every variance is explained.
Your first priority will be a cleanup project. You’ll work directly with our Director of Accounting to bring the aging reports and the general ledger back into agreement. You’ll find what caused each variance, record correcting entries, and document how it was resolved.
If you like solving a puzzle and leaving things better than you found them, this is a good fit.
What You’ll Do
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for all entities and resolve reconciling items promptly
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations and keep clear supporting schedules
- Reconcile subledgers, including the aging reports, to the GL and resolve variances
- Prepare and record journal entries, including recurring, accrual, adjusting and correcting entries, with full support
- Process and reconcile intercompany transactions so balances agree across entities
- Support intercompany eliminations and consolidated reporting
- Help with the aging-to-GL cleanup and recommend process changes so the same issues don’t come back
- Complete assigned month-end close work on time
- Compile financial data and support cost, revenue and forecasting analysis for the senior accounting team
- Support audits and other accounting requests
What We’re Looking For
- 3+ years of hands-on staff accounting experience in any industry
- Proven experience with bank reconciliations, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and reconciling subledgers to the GL
- Multi-entity experience, including intercompany transactions
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (XLOOKUP, pivot tables, large data sets)
- Experience in an ERP or accounting system (no specific platform required)
- An investigative mindset: you trace a variance to its source instead of carrying it forward
- Strong attention to detail and organization
- You document your work clearly enough that others can follow it
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business, or equivalent experience
Nice to Have
- Construction industry accounting experience
- Sage Intacct
- Experience cleaning up a reconciliation backlog
- Consolidations and intercompany eliminations
- Experience improving close or reconciliation processes
Benefits
- Medical, dental and vision insurance
- 401(k) and profit sharing plan
- Paid vacation
- Paid sick leave
- Paid holidays
