About this role
Job Title: Systems Hardware Design Engineer
Experience: 3+ years
Department: Hardware Engineering / R&D
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: On-site in Irvine, California
Salary Range: $100,000 – $150,000 per year, based on experience
About Omnitron
Omnitron Systems Technology designs and manufactures fiber media converters, PoE switches, single pair Ethernet products, and network demarcation devices that keep critical networks running.
Headquartered in Irvine, California, we design and manufacture all of our products in the United States, and they are trusted and used by government agencies, utilities, data centers, process automation, security surveillance, and service providers. As a focused, engineering-driven company, our hardware engineers see their designs through from concept to production, working closely with the various cross functional teams.
Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Systems Hardware Design Engineer to design, develop, test, and validate electronic hardware systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in digital and analog circuit design, schematic capture, and supervising PCB layout.
The engineer will be responsible for the complete hardware development lifecycle, from system-level requirements and circuit design through PCB layout, prototype bring-up, debugging, verification, and product release.
Key Responsibilities
- Own hardware design from requirements to release. Define system architecture, design digital, analog, mixed-signal, and power supply circuits, and create schematics in industry-standard EDA tools.
- Select components such as microcontrollers, processors, interfaces, sensors, and power devices, using datasheet review and trade-off analysis.
- Supervise outsourced PCB layout. Set placement, stackup, routing, and impedance constraints; review layouts for grounding, power distribution, and signal integrity; and approve fabrication and assembly files.
- Lead board bring-up of prototype and production hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab equipment.
- Plan and run verification, validation, and qualification testing, including functional, electrical, and performance tests.
- Drive design-for-manufacturing and design-for-test (DFM/DFT), and support production through fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
- Produce and maintain design documentation: schematics, BOMs, test reports, engineering change records, and production transition documents (assembly, test, and programming instructions).
- Work closely with firmware, FPGA, mechanical, systems, manufacturing, and test teams, including leading design reviews.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Strong fundamentals in analog and digital electronics, including circuit analysis, component behavior, signal conditioning, and power management.
- Experience with microcontroller-based designs and common interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, USB, and Ethernet.
- Hands-on schematic capture and a command of PCB layout principles (grounding, decoupling, impedance control, routing, EMI/EMC), plus experience managing external layout, fabrication, and assembly vendors.
- Proven hardware debugging skills with standard lab instruments, and the ability to own designs independently while working closely with a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience with EMC compliance testing, ESD protection, and electrical safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- FPGA development in Verilog or VHDL, including simulation, synthesis, and timing analysis.
- High-speed digital and mixed-signal design, including signal integrity, power integrity, DC-DC converters, LDOs, and power sequencing.
- Networking or ruggedized hardware, such as Ethernet PHYs and switches, fiber optic transceivers (SFP), PoE, or industrial-temperature electronics.
- EDA tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro/OrCAD, Siemens Xpedition, or KiCad.
What We Offer
- Salary range of $100,000 – $150,000 per year, based on experience.
- 401(k) with profit sharing and health benefits.
- Opportunities to work across the complete hardware product development lifecycle.
- Hands-on exposure to challenging electronic design and system integration projects.
- Collaboration with experienced engineers across hardware, firmware, FPGA, and systems disciplines.
- Opportunities for technical growth and increasing design ownership based on experience.
Pay: $100,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
Benefits:
