Job Description
Our client, a growing,
family-owned manufacturer of custom-engineered equipment for drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities
, is seeking an experienced
Mechanical Designer
to join its Engineering team in
Charlotte, NC.
This is a hands-on mechanical design position for someone who enjoys seeing their work move from
SolidWorks models and fabrication drawings to equipment being manufactured and assembled in the shop
.
The Mechanical Designer will work closely with Project Engineers, Project Management, Manufacturing, Sourcing, and other internal teams to develop detailed mechanical designs and fabrication packages. The ideal candidate is comfortable making well-considered design decisions independently while collaborating with engineers who will review and support those decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed 3D mechanical equipment designs and models using SolidWorks
- Create accurate fabrication-level drawing packages
- Design mechanical equipment, weldments, components, and assemblies
- Apply appropriate drafting standards to drawings and technical documentation
- Design and integrate power transmission components, including motors, gearboxes, chain drives, shafts, and bearings
- Complete mechanical design calculations as required
- Work closely with Project Engineers throughout the design and review process
- Make informed design decisions rather than relying on step-by-step direction
- Support Project Managers with technical drawings and project submittal packages
- Ensure design deliverables meet project specifications, schedules, milestones, and quality requirements
- Work directly with fabrication, machining, and assembly teams to address design and manufacturing questions
- Collaborate across Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Sales, and Customer Service
- Assist with technical issues related to manufacturing and field installation
- Manage design responsibilities across multiple projects simultaneously
- Participate in product and process improvement initiatives
- Occasionally support field measurements, installation, and troubleshooting
Qualifications
- 3+ years of relevant mechanical design experience
- Strong, hands-on SolidWorks experience is required; candidates should be able to work effectively in SolidWorks without foundational training
- Experience designing mechanical equipment, weldments, and assemblies
- Strong knowledge of drafting standards and fabrication-level drawings
- Experience designing equipment or products that are fabricated, machined, and assembled
- Experience with power transmission components such as motors, gearboxes, chain drives, shafts, and bearings
- Ability to complete mechanical design calculations
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to make independent design decisions while working collaboratively with engineering and manufacturing teams
- Strong communication skills
- Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
Preferred Experience
- Advanced SolidWorks proficiency and/or SolidWorks certification
- AutoCAD and 2D design/detailing experience
- Knowledge of fabrication processes including welding, machining, bending, and punching
- Experience designing industrial machinery or custom-engineered equipment
- Experience with material handling systems, conveyors, or bulk storage
- Experience within the municipal water/wastewater industry
- Experience with electrical power, instrumentation, or controls
