Mechatronics/Systems Engineer for Robotics Development

Location: Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University and Ithaca College, in the beautiful Finger Lakes wine region.

Job Type

Full\-time. On site.

About the Role

Are you a versatile engineer who loves bringing complex automated systems to life? Are you looking for a scientifically and technically challenging research and development position with large real\-world impacts?

MiTeGen has been providing innovative solutions for X\-ray and electron\-based diffraction and imaging and for biomolecular and pharmaceutical R\&D since 2004\. Our products are used in academic, government, and industrial laboratories in more than 40 countries and on the International Space Station.

We are looking for talented innovators to join our team and to focus on design and commercial development of instruments and tools as we continue to expand our capabilities and market reach into biological, biomedical and agricultural applications.

As a Mechatronics/Systems Engineer at MiTeGen, you will bridge the gap between hardware, software, and science. If you have a "maker" mindset and thrive on seeing your designs go from an idea to a physical reality, this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rapidly design, prototype and test mechatronic/robotic frameworks for Cryo IVF systems.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, and controllers so autonomous machines can accurately perceive their environment and execute precise physical actions.
  • Write control algorithms and software utilizing C\+\+, Python, and ROS for higher\-level trajectory planning.
  • Architect and build complete embedded systems across schematic capture, custom PCB layout, and firmware development.
  • Develop, execute, and document product systems tests to ensure functionality and reliability, as well as to optimize performance.
  • Communicate, plan, and execute projects alongside internal teams while proactively aligning with external collaborators to manage schedules, track deliverables, and address project needs.
  • Collaborate with cross\-functional engineering, manufacturing, and business teams to transition products from R\&D concept to full commercialization.

Job Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field. Candidates with 2\-year degrees and exceptional experience will also be considered.
  • Software \& Robotics: Hands\-on experience programming SCARA industrial robots, with the foundational coding skills (Python, C\+\+) needed to help develop custom robotic systems over time.
  • Frameworks: Hands\-on experience with Robot Operating System (ROS / ROS2\).
  • Hardware: Strong understanding of microcontrollers, actuators, and sensor integration.
  • Math: Solid foundation in kinematics, dynamics, and linear algebra.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience: 2\+ years of industrial or R\&D experience in robotics, with a proven track record of taking complex electro\-mechanical systems from initial concept to working physical prototype.
  • Software \& Robotics: Knowledge of computer vision frameworks (OpenCV), machine learning libraries, or exposure to simulation platforms (Webots, Gazebo) or engineering tools (MATLAB/Simulink) for modeling custom robot mechanics is a plus.
  • PCB and Firmware Design: Proven ability to design embedded systems from scratch, encompassing both hardware (circuitry/layout) and firmware (coding).
  • Electronics: Hands\-on experience with schematic capture and board layout.
  • Motion Control: Direct experience configuring and tuning motor controllers.
  • Basic CAD \& Prototyping: Practical ability to generate simple 3D models and basic mechanical geometry (e.g., SolidWorks) to support prototyping, 3D printing, or early\-stage concepts.
  • Leadership: Interest and accomplished experience in leading small teams and/or in project management.
  • Solutions Engineering: Ability to partner with customers to identify needs and innovate solutions.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Above band salary possible for exceptionally qualified individuals.
  • Company sponsored 401(k) (after 1 year)
  • 401(k) match (after 1 year)
  • A fully equipped engineering workshop and collaborative laboratory environment.
  • The opportunity to work on highly impactful technology with a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume along with a portfolio or brief description highlighting a specific mechatronic/robotic system you have designed, programmed, and integrated from the ground up.
