About this role
About the role
We're hiring a Senior Tax Accountant to own day-to-day indirect tax compliance for our energy trading business. You'll work across crude oil, refined products, NGLs, natural gas, and petrochemicals in a multi-state and cross-border footprint.
This candidate is a self-starter who takes initiative to research and resolve issues with minimal supervision, uses strong analytical skills to identify root causes, and proactively improves processes to increase accuracy and efficiency.
This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You'll file returns, keep our licenses and exemption certificates current, maintain tax setup in our trading systems, and support audits. You'll report to the Director of Tax and Compliance within the Accounting Department, and also work closely with the Risk, Trading, Scheduling, KYC, and Legal departments.
What you'll do
- Own tax setup in our systems. Build and maintain tax rates, rules, and exemption setups in RightAngle and Entrade, and test that transactions are taxed correctly.
- Prepare and review tax returns. Prepare and review state and federal indirect tax returns, including federal excise, motor fuel, NGL, and sales/use tax.
- Manage master tax reporting files. Compile, reconcile, and analyze the master tax reporting files used for monthly filings across entities, commodities, and tax types.
- Oversee tax account reconciliations. Oversee the reconciliation and balancing of all tax accounts to the general ledger, and investigate variances.
- Be the go-to contact for tax questions. Serve as a point of contact for tax issues and questions from Trading, Scheduling, Accounting, KYC, customers, suppliers, and tax agencies.
- Support tax research. Maintain and organize tax research documentation, and assist with research on new products, states, and transactions.
- Manage license renewals. Run the annual license renewal cycle and keep the compliance calendar current.
- Coordinate exemption certificates and tax licenses. Coordinate the customer exemption certificate and tax license process, from collection and validation through system setup and renewals.
- Assist with audits. Assist with state and federal tax audits and investigations by gathering data, preparing documentation, and drafting responses.
What you bring
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of indirect tax experience, including excise, motor fuel, or sales/use tax.
- Experience preparing multi-state tax returns and reconciling tax accounts to the general ledger.
- Working knowledge of exemption and resale certificate requirements.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with large transaction data sets.
- Clear communicator who can explain tax requirements to non-tax colleagues.
Preferred
- Experience in energy, commodity trading, midstream, or petroleum marketing.
- Familiarity with the federal terminal/bulk transfer system, position holder rules, and Form 637 registrations.
- Experience with RightAngle, Entrade, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar ETRM and ERP systems.
