About this role
You MUST submit a cover letter to be considered for this role. Please do not apply without a cover letter. See instructions below.
Mathews Law is seeking an experienced, Virginia-licensed estate planning attorney for a part-time, of counsel role. We help clients protect the people they love through thoughtful, heart-based planning that combines strong legal work with warmth, careful listening, and practical guidance.
We are looking for an attorney who can independently counsel clients and take responsibility for complete, accurate, client-ready estate plans. This is not an entry-level or fully remote position. You must be available to meet clients in person at our Vienna and/or Alexandria offices on agreed-upon days of the week.
Responsibilities
- Meet with clients to understand their families, assets, concerns, and planning goals.
- Counsel clients on foundational and more sophisticated estate planning, including revocable trusts, marital trusts, special needs planning, and related tax and distribution considerations.
- Develop individualized planning recommendations and explain options clearly and compassionately.
- Collaborate with our paralegal and client service team to move matters forward efficiently.
- Review, revise, and finalize estate planning documents. Our paralegal handles much of the initial drafting, but you must be able to make substantive revisions and independently bring your documents to completion.
- Take responsibility for the legal accuracy, consistency, and completeness of your work.
- Attend attorney departmental meetings, participate in ongoing training, and follow the firm’s planning standards and workflows.
- Communicate promptly and respectfully with clients and colleagues.
Qualifications
- Active Virginia law license in good standing.
- Extensive estate planning and client-counseling experience.
- Practical experience beyond basic wills and trusts, including marital trusts and special needs planning.
- Strong drafting skills, sound legal judgment, and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to manage matters reliably while collaborating with a team.
- Availability for recurring in-person client meetings in Northern Virginia.
- A friendly, approachable manner and a genuine commitment to helping clients make informed decisions without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Maryland licensure and familiarity with the New Law Business Model or Personal Family Lawyer approach are welcome but not required.
Our Culture
We value kindness, accountability, collaboration, and continued learning. Our approach is relationship-centered: we want clients to feel heard, respected, and confident that their plans reflect what matters most to them. The right attorney will embrace both the technical and human sides of estate planning.
Schedule and Compensation
This is a part-time, hourly opportunity. Weekly hours and in-office availability will be agreed upon together, with compensation based on experience and qualifications.
For the right mutual fit, we anticipate a long-term relationship. There may be opportunities to expand the role over time, depending on your interests and the firm’s needs; growth is an option, not a requirement.
