About the Role

The Systems Architect designs and builds the integrations and backend systems that connect MTA's tolling, customer account, financial, and internal business applications. This is a hands-on role: you'll set design direction, guide other developers, and write and support production code.

Responsibilities

  • Confer with MTA operating divisions to analyze procedures, identify issues, and define data input, output, and reporting requirements
  • Design system and integration architecture; prepare workflow diagrams and technical documentation
  • Develop, test, and support backend services and APIs
  • Research, test, and select technology products needed for solution delivery
  • Review system capabilities and limitations to determine whether requested changes are feasible
  • Guide and coordinate the work of Application Developers
  • Maintain and upgrade systems after implementation, including production support and error resolution

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer sciences or related field; additional professional work beyond minimum required may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • 5+ years' applied programming experience in a highly complex business environment
  • Java backend development experience
  • Experience designing and developing APIs
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, management, and implementation of software systems
  • Operations experience supporting production systems, including deployments, monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident resolution
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, employees, and business partners

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years' experience, including architecture or integration design
  • C# experience
  • Experience administering or configuring WebSphere and Apache in production environments

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Ability to work for long periods sitting at a desk in front of a computer and the ability to focus.
  • Requires close and distance visual acuity and ability to adjust focus quickly.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Often required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate the keyboard of a personal computer and other office equipment.
  • Professional office work environment with occasional travel to other work sites where there may be exposure to outside weather conditions and/or locales with mechanical equipment that may emit fumes.
  • Normal hours of work are eight (8) hours per day, forty (40) hours per week, Monday to Friday; may be subject to working some non-routine hours.
  • Must be available to come in early or work late on occasion, including weekends.
  • Ability travel to different MTA sites.

Pay: $93,683.00 - $154,357.00 per year
