Job description

About this role

Lynntech is seeking a mechanical engineer to support the development of technologies, prototypes, and products in the defense, aerospace, and medical domains. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across the product development lifecycle, from early-stage technology proof-of-concept through prototype development and testing, to qualification of production-ready designs.

The engineer will be well-rounded and will contribute through the many different functional areas of mechanical engineering, such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, materials, thermodynamics, machine design, controls, manufacturing, and CAD.

The engineer will execute technical work as part of multidisciplinary project teams and will have opportunities to develop leadership skills through increasing technical responsibility, collaboration with customers and teammates, and participation in proposal development.

JOB DESCRIPTION

At Lynntech, engineering is both theoretical and experimental. Our engineers split their time between developing detailed prototype designs and validating those designs in the lab. Engineering projects involve a wide variety of technologies at different stages in the product life cycle, from breadboard proof-of-concepts to minimum viable products.

Our mechanical engineers are commonly engaged in the following technical activities:

  • Participate in concept generation and problem solving in brainstorming sessions with talented and experienced innovators.
  • Support new project proposals by clearly conveying engineering approaches, test plans, and innovative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Design and develop mechanical, electromechanical, fluidic, and thermal prototype components, devices, systems and test stands to support emerging technologies.
  • Collaborate with fabricators and vendors to develop fabrication plans and specifications.
  • Build, test, and troubleshoot these prototypes and monitor outcomes with a critical eye for improvement.
  • Analyze empirical data to determine trends in order to make design recommendations.
  • Formulate and execute strategies and plans for engineering portions of projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to transition early-stage research concepts into engineered systems and products.

Engineers advance throughout their careers by growing in a flexible combination of value-added areas as suits their strengths and interests:

  • Developing proficiency in their discipline through technical engineering work
  • Building depth of expertise in technology areas and contributing to proposal writing to obtain funding in those areas
  • Strategic guidance of technical teams through project leadership roles
  • Growing and mentoring other engineering personnel in their careers through supervising roles

Qualifications

Basic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related engineering discipline, as well as:

  • Experience, knowledge, and background in core functional areas such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, materials, thermodynamics, machine design, controls, and manufacturing and computer aided design.
  • Experience with utilizing engineering principles to develop real hardware
  • Proven creative and hands-on skills in design, repair, or improvement of mechanical or manufacturing devices or systems
  • Strong self-starter
  • Able to work in fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-oriented environment

Preferred qualifications include Master of Engineering or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering disciplines, or bachelor's degree with 2-6 years of relevant work experience, as well as the following demonstrated strengths:

  • Applying fundamental physics and engineering principles in a research and product development environment
  • Broad competency in core functional areas such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, materials, thermodynamics, machine design, controls, manufacturing, and CAD
  • Well-rounded, capable of understanding the big picture application as well as the fine details
  • Proven creative and hands-on skills in design, repair, or improvement of mechanical or manufacturing devices or systems
  • Strong self-starter who can work autonomously to contribute to a team effort
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-oriented environment
  • Capable of prioritizing and balancing competing project demands and conflicting project requirements
  • Experience in mechanical design, prototyping, and drafting using CAD parametric modeling software (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks, Inventor)
  • Experience in finite element analysis to support engineering design work
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and simulation to support design an analysis
  • Experience with electrical hardware, instrumentation, and control systems
  • Prior involvement in technical or proposal writing, project planning or collaborative R&D activities
