About this role
Senior / Staff Frontend Engineer Location: Bay Area, CA (Hybrid – 3 days/week on-site) Role Type: Full-Time Reports To: Head of Software Engineering Compensation: $163-213K About Our Client Our client builds intelligent robotics engineered to automate prescription dispensing.
Their flagship machine takes stock bottles of medication and autonomously produces accurately counted, labeled vials, freeing pharmacists and technicians from repetitive manual tasks so they can focus on patient care. Designed to operate right behind the pharmacy counter, their system blends physical robotics with intuitive software.
About the Role
As a Frontend Engineer on the team, you will take full ownership of the primary interface used to operate the machine, a large, touch-only screen built for busy pharmacy technicians working in high-throughput environments. Moving forward, you will also architect and define the frontend standards for every subsequent product interface across the company, including cloud management dashboards and next-generation systems.
This position is open at both the Senior and Staff levels: Senior Level: You own the operator screen surface end-to-end.
Staff Level
You establish the overarching frontend standards, design system practices, and engineering workflows that other engineers build against across teams.
What You’ll
Own The Operator Interface: Build and maintain the core touch interface covering prescription queues, medication and consumable replenishment, machine diagnostics, system administration, and secure technician sign-in.
Design-to-Production Fidelity
Partner closely with Product Designers to translate interactive design prototypes into robust React applications with pixel-perfect fidelity.
Touch-First Principles
Maintain strict touch interaction standards—ensuring appropriate touch target sizes (48px+ minimum), high-contrast readability at a glance, event-driven screen advances, and safeguards against accidental inputs on high-stakes actions.
Interruption & Notification Architecture
Implement a structured three-tier alert model (ambient status updates, calls for attention, and blocking dialogs) to keep technicians informed without creating cognitive fatigue.
Type-Safe Systems Integration
Interface with machine-level software via a strict TypeScript contract generated directly from Rust source models over WebSockets, ensuring absolute state sync and reliability.
Frontend Excellence
Set and uphold rigorous quality benchmarks through comprehensive unit testing, end-to-end browser tests, design token enforcement, and robust linting.
Scalable Ecosystem
Architect scalable standards that will extend to cloud operations dashboards, mobile controls, and future hardware interfaces. What Success Looks Like in the First 90 Days First 30 Days: Onboard into the code base, merge initial UI enhancements, and gain deep familiarity with the prescription queue, replenishment workflows, and alert models alongside our product design team.
First 60 Days
Take full ownership of design updates, refine the end-to-end testing suite for real-world technician workflows, and finalize the three-layer interruption framework.
First 90 Days
Ensure full production readiness and security compliance for the primary operator interface, solidify frontend engineering guidelines for the organization, and roadmap the architecture for the upcoming cloud operations dashboard.
What We’re Looking For
Must-Have Qualifications End-to-End Ownership: Proven experience owning critical, high-availability product surfaces end-to-end in production environments.
Advanced TypeScript
Deep expertise with strict compiler configurations, writing type-safe abstractions that make invalid application states impossible to express.
Modern React & State Management
Proficient with React 19 and state architecture over real-time WebSockets. Comfort building screens where domain state is driven reliably from the backend/hardware.
Modern Tooling Stack
Hands-on experience with Tailwind CSS (v4), Vite, Vitest, and Playwright for component and end-to-end browser testing.
Design Collaboration
Strong track record of converting living prototypes into high-performance software while maintaining active alignment with design partners. Important / Nice-to-Have Constrained / Embedded UI Experience: Experience designing or building for fixed touch panels, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, embedded browsers, or industrial controls.
State Machines
Comfort reasoning about complex application flows using explicit states and transitions.
Design Systems
Experience building or maintaining design systems/standards adopted by multiple engineering teams.
Regulatory / Healthcare
Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) or regulated domain requirements (healthcare, industrial automation, robotics). Why Join Us?
Tangible Impact
Your software directly controls physical robotics operating in real-world pharmacy environments.
High-Trust Culture
Work with a small, elite engineering team with zero bureaucracy and high operational autonomy.
Hybrid Work Model
Collaborate in person 3 days a week at our Bay Area headquarters, where you can work directly with the physical hardware and robotics engineering team. Core Values Servant Leadership Do the Hard Things
