Lifeloc Technologies, a leader in breath alcohol testing and emerging drug\-detection technologies, is seeking an experienced **Senior Embedded Systems Engineer** to support the development and commercialization of next\-generation electronic instrumentation.
This position will play a key role in the design, development, integration, testing, and sustaining engineering of embedded systems used within Lifeloc products, including our next\-generation **breath alcohol** and **drug\-detection** product lines.
The ideal candidate is a strong hands\-on embedded engineer with experience developing reliable, production\-ready systems and working at the interface between hardware, firmware, software, sensors, and electromechanical components.
We are also looking for an engineer who understands how modern **AI\-assisted engineering tools** can be used responsibly to improve development efficiency, debugging, testing, documentation, and technical problem\-solving.
Key Responsibilities
· Design, develop, integrate, and maintain embedded firmware and software for new and existing products.
· Develop embedded applications using **C/C\+\+** and related programming languages.
· Develop and maintain systems utilizing **FreeRTOS and/or Embedded Linux environments**.
· Support embedded hardware design, processor and peripheral selection, board bring\-up, and hardware/firmware integration.
· Develop and troubleshoot interfaces including **USB, UART, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, Wi\-Fi, and Bluetooth/BLE**.
· Integrate sensors, motors, displays, wireless devices, and other electromechanical components into embedded systems.
· Perform system\-level troubleshooting involving interactions between hardware, firmware, software, and mechanical components.
· Participate in requirements development, system architecture, design reviews, risk analysis, verification, and validation activities.
· Develop engineering test methods, automated test scripts, diagnostic tools, and regression testing approaches.
· Support prototype development, manufacturing transfer, production testing, and sustaining engineering activities.
· Investigate field and production issues and perform root\-cause analysis and corrective\-action support.
· Create and maintain software requirements, architecture documentation, interface specifications, test protocols, engineering reports, and release documentation.
· Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, software, scientific, manufacturing, and quality personnel.
AI\-Assisted Engineering
Lifeloc is expanding the responsible use of artificial intelligence within its engineering organization. The successful candidate will be expected to incorporate modern AI\-assisted tools where they provide meaningful improvements in engineering efficiency and quality.
Applications may include:
· Using AI coding assistants to support code development, review, refactoring, and troubleshooting.
· Using AI to assist with debugging, log analysis, error interpretation, and root\-cause investigation.
· Developing test cases, test scripts, regression tests, and automated engineering tools with AI assistance.
· Using AI\-supported tools for analysis of device, sensor, manufacturing, and test data.
· Assisting with development and review of technical documentation, requirements, test protocols, and engineering reports.
· Evaluating alternative software and system architectures.
· Using AI to accelerate technical research and investigation of unfamiliar technologies.
AI\-generated code, analysis, and recommendations must be independently reviewed and validated using sound engineering practices before implementation.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in **Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science**, or a closely related technical discipline.
· Approximately **5\+ years of professional embedded systems development experience**, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Strong programming experience with **C and C\+\+** in embedded environments.
· Experience with microcontrollers, microprocessors, embedded peripherals, and hardware interfaces.
· Experience developing within **RTOS and/or Embedded Linux environments**.
· Strong understanding of embedded hardware/software interaction.
· Experience debugging embedded systems using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, protocol analyzers, and related engineering equipment.
· Experience with source control and modern software\-development practices.
· Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root\-cause analysis skills.
· Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
· Strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
AI and Modern Development Skills
Candidates should have experience with, or a demonstrated willingness to effectively utilize, modern engineering productivity tools such as:
· Claude
· Copilot
· Gemini
· ChatGPT
· GitHub and others
The successful candidate must be capable of independently evaluating the accuracy, safety, reliability, and appropriateness of AI\-generated code and technical recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: · Real\-time operating systems such as **FreeRTOS**.
- · Hardware\-in\-the\-loop or automated system testing.
- · Embedded Linux development, including **Yocto Linux**.
- · Bluetooth/BLE and Wi\-Fi integration.
- · Ethernet and network communications.
- · Touchscreen or embedded GUI development.
- · Battery\-powered embedded devices.
- · Motor control and electromechanical systems.
- · Medical, diagnostic, analytical, or regulated instrumentation.
- · Design verification and validation.
- · Manufacturing test development and production support.
- · EMI/EMC troubleshooting and regulatory compliance testing.
- · Python scripting and automated data analysis.
- · Cloud\-connected or IoT devices.
- · REST APIs and device\-to\-cloud communications.
- Experience with **machine learning, edge AI, computer vision, signal classification, anomaly detection, or deployment of AI/ML models on embedded platforms** is a plus but is not required.
- What We Are Looking For We are looking for an engineer who combines strong embedded systems fundamentals with a practical, forward\-looking approach to engineering.
- The right candidate should be comfortable moving between **firmware, hardware, system integration, troubleshooting, testing, and product development** rather than working exclusively within a narrowly defined software role.
- Just as importantly, we want someone who views AI as an engineering productivity tool—not a substitute for engineering judgment.
- The successful candidate will know how to use emerging technologies to accelerate development while maintaining the discipline, verification, documentation, and technical rigor required to develop reliable commercial products.
