About this role
Levco provides heating oil, propane, and HVAC services to homes throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties, alongside a real estate business. We take pride in doing the work well, earning our customers’ trust, and building a team that supports one another. We invest in our people and technology to support the long-term success of the business.
Position Overview
We’re looking for a hands-on Controller to lead our finance team and take ownership of accurate accounting, timely reporting, and strong financial controls. You’ll work closely with our bookkeepers, management, and outside accountant to keep daily operations and the monthly close running smoothly.
Beyond the accounting, you’ll coach and develop the team, set clear expectations, and improve financial workflows through practical process changes and automation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the finance team:
- Manage our bookkeepers, set priorities, review work, and hold the team accountable.
- Build strong relationships, provide coaching, and help employees develop their skills.
Improve and automate financial workflows:
- Simplify processes to reduce manual work, errors, and delays.
- Work with our internal systems team to automate routine tasks and checks, focusing employee attention on exceptions that require judgment.
- Document procedures and business rules, validate changes without weakening financial controls, and train the team on new workflows.
Keep the accounting on track:
- Own the monthly close with our outside accountant, ensuring timely, accurate reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Oversee AP, AR, and bookkeeping, ensuring accurate records and follow-through on outstanding items.
- Maintain payment, collection, and account-access controls, with clear approvals and appropriate separation of duties.
- Prepare reliable financial reports, explain significant changes, and flag issues for management.
- Help develop budgets, monitor results, and address variances with managers.
- Maintain banking relationships and handle routine banking needs.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Experience managing month-end close, financial reporting, AP, AR, and account reconciliations.
- Ability to lead, coach, and develop a small team.
- Strong attention to detail and sound judgment when handling company funds.
- Proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheets, with a track record of simplifying processes.
- Clear communication and effective collaboration with management, staff, and outside accountants.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related field. CPA preferred.
