Job description

About this role

Position Summary:

The Senior Database Administrator & BI Developer is JohnsByrne’s technical owner of the data layer that runs the business.

This role administers the Progress OpenEdge and Microsoft SQL Server databases underlying CAI Monarch ERP and our other line-of-business systems, and owns the reporting and analytics stack built on top of them — from the existing Crystal Reports, SSRS, and QlikView libraries to our Power BI and Microsoft Fabric platform.

This is a senior, hands-on position. It keeps production databases healthy, secure, and recoverable today, and it leads the modernization of reporting so that leadership, plant management, and finance work from a single, governed, trusted source of data.

The role carries no direct reports; its influence comes from technical depth, sound judgment about data, and the ability to turn a vague business question into a model, a pipeline, and a report that people actually use.

We are looking for someone who can tune a slow query in the morning, design a semantic model in the afternoon, and explain to a plant manager why two reports disagree — and fix it — the next day.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Database Administration — Progress OpenEdge and Microsoft SQL Server

  • Administer, monitor, and maintain the Progress OpenEdge and Microsoft SQL Server databases supporting CAI Monarch ERP and related business applications across Chicago and Los Angeles.
  • Own backup, restore, and recovery strategy; define and regularly test recovery point and recovery time objectives, and document restore procedures so that recovery does not depend on any single individual.
  • Perform performance tuning, index and statistics maintenance, capacity planning, and growth forecasting; identify and resolve blocking, locking, and resource contention before users feel it.
  • Plan and execute database upgrades, patching, version migrations, and environment refreshes (production, test, training) in coordination with application owners and change management.
  • Manage database security: logins, roles, least-privilege access, service accounts, auditing, and encryption, in alignment with JohnsByrne IT policy.
  • Support ERP upgrades and module rollouts from the database side, partnering with the Senior ERP Analyst and CAI on data conversion, validation, and cutover activities.

Data Platform and Integration — Microsoft Fabric

  • Architect, build, and administer JohnsByrne’s Microsoft Fabric environment, including Lakehouse and Warehouse design, OneLake organization, workspace structure, and capacity management.
  • Design and maintain data pipelines and dataflows that bring ERP, quality, estimating, and other operational data into the analytics platform reliably, on schedule, and with monitoring and alerting in place.
  • Establish a layered data architecture (raw, cleansed, curated) with clear lineage, so any reported figure can be traced back to its source system.
  • Evaluate new Fabric and Power BI capabilities and advise IT leadership on what is worth adopting, when, and at what licensing and capacity cost.

Business Intelligence and Analytics — Power BI

  • Lead Power BI development as the senior practitioner: dimensional and semantic model design, DAX, Power Query, performance optimization, and report and dashboard design.
  • Own Power BI governance: workspace and app strategy, deployment pipelines, row-level security, certified and endorsed datasets, refresh management, and usage monitoring.
  • Partner with Operations, Accounting and Finance, Sales, and Executive leadership to translate business questions into KPIs, models, and reports with agreed definitions.
  • Build shared, reusable semantic models so departments self-serve from a common source rather than maintaining parallel spreadsheets and conflicting numbers.

Reporting Library Stewardship and Migration — Crystal Reports, SSRS, QlikView

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and modify the existing Crystal Reports, SSRS, and QlikView reporting libraries, including scheduled and distributed reports that operations and finance rely on daily.
  • Inventory the legacy reporting estate, identify duplicate and unused reports, and lead a planned, prioritized migration to Power BI and Fabric where it delivers clear value.
  • Validate migrated reports against their predecessors so that numbers reconcile before legacy reports are retired.

Data Governance, Quality, and Documentation

  • Define and maintain data definitions, business glossaries, and source-to-report lineage so that terms such as job cost, on-time delivery, and inventory value mean the same thing in every report.
  • Implement data quality checks and exception reporting that surface integrity problems in source systems, and work with process owners to correct them at the source.
  • Author and maintain database runbooks, configuration records, data dictionaries, and BI standards to JohnsByrne documentation standards; treat documentation as a standing deliverable.
  • Support audit, compliance, and data-retention requirements related to financial and operational data.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Serve as the technical counterpart to the Senior ERP Analyst: the ERP Analyst owns business process and configuration; this role owns the data, databases, and analytics that support them.
  • Coordinate with IT infrastructure on servers, storage, networking, identity, and security as they affect database and analytics workloads.
  • Work with CAI and other software vendors on database-level support cases, upgrades, and integration requirements.
  • Coach power users and analysts across departments toward responsible self-service reporting.

Education and Experience

Required

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in database administration and reporting, including administration of production Progress OpenEdge and Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • At least 5 years of senior-level Power BI experience, including enterprise semantic model design, advanced DAX, Power Query, deployment pipelines, row-level security, and workspace governance.
  • Hands-on experience designing and administering Microsoft Fabric workloads, including Lakehouse or Warehouse, Data Factory pipelines or Dataflows Gen2, and capacity management.
  • Demonstrated experience authoring and maintaining reports in Crystal Reports, SSRS, and QlikView.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing ERP data structures — job costing, inventory, production, purchasing, and order-to-cash — sufficient to model them accurately and challenge data that does not make sense.
  • A proven record of producing technical documentation and runbooks that others can follow.

Strongly Preferred

  • Direct experience with the CAI Monarch database schema, or with print, packaging, or converting ERP systems.
  • Experience leading a migration from legacy reporting tools to Power BI and/or Microsoft Fabric.
  • Experience in a multi-site manufacturing environment.
  • Relevant Microsoft certifications, such as Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600), Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700), Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300), or SQL Server/Azure database administration credentials.
  • Progress OpenEdge database administration training or certification.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. For this role, demonstrated depth in database administration and enterprise BI is weighted more heavily than academic credential.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Technical Skills — Required

  • Advanced T-SQL, including query optimization, execution plan analysis, stored procedures, and views.
  • Progress OpenEdge database administration: structure and storage areas, after-imaging, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring; working familiarity with Progress SQL (ODBC/JDBC) access.
  • Microsoft SQL Server administration: high availability and recovery models, maintenance plans, SQL Agent jobs, security, and monitoring.
  • Dimensional modeling (star schema, slowly changing dimensions) and semantic model design.
  • Power BI Desktop and Service, DAX, Power Query (M), and Microsoft Fabric data engineering components.
  • Crystal Reports, SSRS, and QlikView development and administration.
  • Familiarity with scripting for automation (PowerShell, Python, or similar).

Core Competencies — Required

  • Analytical judgment — the ability to reason from a symptom back to a root cause in a query, a data set, a pipeline, or a source system.
  • Requirements gathering — able to turn a loosely stated business question into a defined metric, model, and report.
  • Clear, structured technical writing and data documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain data issues to non-technical audiences without jargon.
  • Disciplined change management and attention to detail when working in production systems.
  • Effective collaboration; comfortable operating through influence rather than positional authority.
  • Ownership mentality — follows problems through to resolution and prevents recurrence.

Helpful, Not Required

  • Exposure to Azure services, Microsoft Purview, or other data governance tooling.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps) integration with Power BI.
  • Exposure to related manufacturing systems — Radius, shop-floor data collection, wireless barcoding — is a plus.

Measures of Success

Performance in this role will be evaluated against the following outcomes.

First 90 Days

  • Working relationships established with the Senior ERP Analyst, Accounting and Finance, Operations, and plant leadership at each site.

•Health assessment of all production Progress and SQL Server databases delivered to the Director of IT, including backup and recovery status, performance, security, and risks.

  • Verified, documented, and tested restore of the Monarch ERP database.
  • Inventory of the Crystal Reports, SSRS, QlikView, and Power BI estate, with a prioritized consolidation and migration roadmap agreed with IT and business leadership.

First 12 Months

  • Database monitoring, alerting, and maintenance in place, with measurable reduction in unplanned database-related incidents and performance complaints.
  • Microsoft Fabric architecture established, with core ERP data flowing through governed pipelines on a reliable schedule.
  • Certified Power BI semantic models published for priority subject areas, such as job costing, inventory, production, and sales.
  • Agreed migration milestones from legacy reporting tools delivered, with retired reports reconciled before decommissioning.
  • Database runbooks, data dictionary, and BI standards published and maintained in the current documentation library.

Ongoing

  • Databases secure, recoverable, and performing within agreed targets.
  • Reporting trusted by leadership as the source of record, with consistent definitions across departments and sites.
  • Growing, governed self-service reporting adoption, with fewer one-off report requests reaching IT.
