Job description

About this role

Iron Box LLC is a locally owned shipping container rental and sales company based in Fairfax, Vermont. We provide portable storage containers to homeowners, contractors, businesses, farms, municipalities, and other customers throughout Vermont and the surrounding region.

We are looking for a Sales & Operations Manager to become a key part of our small team and help lead the day-to-day operation of the business.

This is not a traditional desk-only sales position and it is not purely an operations position. We are looking for someone who enjoys talking with customers, developing new business, solving problems, coordinating people and equipment, and helping a growing small business operate efficiently.

The position will be approximately 50% sales/business development and 50% operations.

What You'll DoSales & Business Development

  • Answer and manage incoming company phone calls throughout the workday.
  • Respond to inbound rental and container-sale opportunities.
  • Develop new commercial and repeat customer accounts.
  • Perform both inside and outside sales.
  • Build relationships with contractors, construction companies, property managers, businesses, municipalities, farms, developers, and other potential customers.
  • Follow up with open opportunities and larger quotes.
  • Nurture existing customer relationships.
  • Reconnect with previous and dormant customers.
  • Identify opportunities to increase rental fleet utilization.
  • Develop new accounts that can produce repeat rental and sales business.
  • Handle more complicated quotes, negotiations, and customer situations.
  • Work with the owner to develop pricing and sales strategies.

Administrative support will be available for routine quoting, CRM maintenance, order entry, customer follow-up, website updates, and other recurring tasks so this position can spend meaningful time actually selling and developing business.

Daily Operations

  • Manage container inventory and availability.
  • Determine which inventory is available for rental and sale.
  • Coordinate the daily delivery and pickup schedule.
  • Work closely with our driver to develop an efficient and realistic schedule.
  • Review potential delivery locations using maps, satellite imagery, customer photos, and other information.
  • Evaluate delivery access and identify difficult or unusual deliveries before trucks are dispatched.
  • Communicate with customers regarding delivery requirements and operational issues.
  • Coordinate the handoff from completed sale or rental to delivery.
  • Resolve routine customer and operational problems.
  • Help ensure our sales, rental, inventory, and delivery systems stay synchronized.

Container Sourcing & Purchasing

  • Monitor inventory levels and determine upcoming container needs.
  • Source shipping containers from suppliers.
  • Review container pricing, condition, availability, and transportation costs.
  • Negotiate container purchases.
  • Coordinate incoming container transportation.
  • Help determine the appropriate mix of rental and sale inventory.

The owner will work closely with the successful candidate on purchasing and sourcing during approximately the first six months while the individual learns our vendors, inventory requirements, pricing, and purchasing strategy.

New Inventory

  • Coordinate receipt of incoming containers.
  • Confirm container numbers, type, condition, and intended use.
  • Coordinate identification stickers and photographs.
  • Work with the driver/yard operation to identify repair needs.
  • Provide accurate information to administrative support so new inventory can be entered into company systems and placed on our website.

Trucks, Equipment & Yard Operations

  • Work closely with our driver/mechanic regarding trucks, trailers, yard equipment, and container-handling equipment.
  • Help coordinate preventative maintenance and outside service.
  • Monitor equipment downtime and upcoming service needs.
  • Assist in prioritizing repairs and operational needs.
  • Bring significant equipment decisions to the owner.

You will not be expected to be the company's mechanic or primary driver, but you should be comfortable working around trucks, trailers, heavy equipment, contractors, and an active storage-container yard.

Team Coordination

You will work closely with:

Owner / Manager – company strategy, capital decisions, pricing, major purchases, planning, and significant exceptions.

Driver / Yard / Mechanic – deliveries, pickups, physical inventory, container readiness, trucks, equipment, repairs, and yard operations.

Sales & Operations Administrative Coordinator – quotes, CRM, work orders, approved scheduling, inventory records, website inventory, customer email/Facebook inquiries, and administrative follow-up.

Accounting / AP / AR – customer billing, receivables, vendor bills, payments, and accounting administration.

The Sales & Operations Manager will direct the day-to-day priorities of the administrative coordinator. Personnel or significant performance issues will be escalated to the owner.

What the First 6–12 Months Look Like

We are not looking for someone to arrive and immediately change everything.

Initially, the focus will be on:

  • Learning how Iron Box operates.

  • Developing relationships with existing customers.
  • Learning our pricing and purchasing strategy.
  • Understanding our inventory.
  • Strengthening sales follow-up.
  • Improving communication between sales, scheduling, inventory, delivery, and administration.
  • Helping establish consistent systems and procedures.

The goal is to get sales, rentals, inventory, scheduling, and operations working together smoothly and predictably.

Once that foundation is strong, the position will increasingly focus on:

  • Growing the rental fleet.
  • Increasing rental utilization.
  • Developing new recurring commercial accounts.
  • Expanding existing customer relationships.

  • Identifying new markets and opportunities.
  • Helping Iron Box continue to grow as a strong local business.

What We're Looking For

The right person will be:

  • Strong at building relationships.
  • Organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Comfortable making decisions.
  • Willing to ask questions when something is unfamiliar.
  • Able to follow through consistently.
  • Comfortable working independently.
  • Able to communicate effectively with both customers and coworkers.
  • Comfortable working in a small-business environment where everyone helps solve problems.
  • Comfortable around trucks, trailers, equipment, contractors, and outdoor operations.
  • Able to use technology and learn new software.
  • Interested in improving systems rather than simply working around problems.
  • Motivated by growing a business and developing long-term customer relationships.

  • Contractor services
  • Agricultural sales

Technology

Iron Box uses systems including:

  • Pipedrive CRM
  • RunStella
  • Google Workspace
  • Google Calendar
  • Google Sheets
  • WordPress / WooCommerce
  • QuickBooks

Experience with these specific systems is helpful but not required.

This is a full-time position based in Fairfax, Vermont.

The position includes a combination of:

  • Customer communication
  • Yard/operations involvement
  • Customer and job-site visits
  • Outside sales and business development

This is not a remote position.

A valid driver's license and ability to travel locally for customer visits and business development are required.

Compensation

Base salary + commission

The compensation structure will be designed to provide a stable base while rewarding successful sales and business development.

Specific compensation will depend on experience and qualifications.

What Success Looks Like

A successful Sales & Operations Manager will eventually help create an Iron Box operation where:

  • Customers receive fast and professional responses.
  • Quotes receive consistent follow-up.
  • New accounts are continually being developed.
  • Existing customers are being nurtured.
  • Inventory records accurately reflect what is physically available.
  • Rental and sale inventory are properly balanced.
  • Deliveries are properly evaluated and scheduled.
  • The driver has the information needed to execute efficiently.
  • Administrative systems remain accurate.
  • Problems are identified before they become emergencies.
  • The rental fleet is being utilized and strategically expanded.
  • The owner can spend more time working on the business rather than managing every daily transaction.

Benefits:

  • Paid time off
