System Engineer
Provide a stable, current, performant, and cost-effective computing environment for Howard Center by designing, installing, upgrading, maintaining, and optimizing the Agency’s on-premises and hosted computing resources. This position is performed in-person, in Burlington VT.
Responsibilities:
- Provide an effective hosting environment by designing, installing, upgrading, and maintaining hosting resources such as servers, storage, backup, virtual desktops
- Assure optimum performance by monitoring hosted resources, recommending improvements, finding better price-performance options, addressing changes to system and / or user requirements, and taking actions to optimize performance of servers, storage, and virtual resources
- Coordinate activities of contracted system monitoring & update services provider
- Maintain integrity and stability to the systems and Agency data by designing, installing, operating, and providing documentation for backup onto alternative media and / or locations. Strives for “three nines” availability in design and usage of systems.
- Maintain the IT Department Disaster Recovery Plan
- Monitor and insure performance of user and system platforms that utilize hosted / virtual resources (namely, VM servers, VM desktops, “thin applications”). Collaborate on issues of application performance with other agency resources
- Serve as a member of the IT Security Incident Response Team
- Factor security in all work decisions and actions
- Document the hosted environment, servers and their usage, storage and usage, component configurations, and other information describing the system design.
- Provide after-hours on-call IT support for agency staff
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology or equivalent professional experience
- Five or more years of professional experience implementing and administering the following technologies in an enterprise computing environment:
1. VMware ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, and/or comparable hypervisors
2. Omnissa Horizon and/or comparable VDI solutions
3. M365, MS Exchange, MS Windows Server, MS SQL Server, Active Directory, Linux servers
4. MFA, SSO, SIEM, EDR, and backup solutions
5. Azure and AWS cloud platforms
6. TCP/IP networking, DNS, DHCP
- Competency using Windows PowerShell, Perl, Python, bash and/or other scripting languages to complete administrative tasks
- Ability to prepare clear and concise technical documentation and work effectively with ticketing and project management systems
- Availability to provide after hours on-call IT support
Structure:
- Full time
- Exempt
- Salary starting at $72,783.08
- We offer a competitive salary commensurate to experience
