Staff Software Engineer
About this role
Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.
HHAeXchange is the leading technology platform for home and community-based care. Founded in 2008, HHAeXchange was created to build a complete, end-to-end homecare solution that helps people who are aging or have disabilities live well in their homes and communities.
Our employees work to transform healthcare by building one homecare platform that connects patients, personal care providers, managed care organizations, and states. The Staff Software Engineer is an experienced, hands-on full-stack engineer who leads technical work within one team or one service area. This role does not manage people.
It leads through strong engineering, clear design documents, and mentoring. The engineer designs, builds, tests, and supports features across the application: C# and .NET services and APIs, TypeScript and Angular user interfaces, and relational database work on SQL Server and PostgreSQL. The software runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and exchanges healthcare data using industry standards.
The engineer works in a regulated environment and protects protected health information (PHI) in all of their work. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
This position is open to candidate located only within the EST or CST time zones within the US. Essential Job Duties
Full-stack delivery: Design, build, test, and maintain reliable features across the C#/.NET back end, the TypeScript/Angular front end, and the database.
Technical lead for the team's work
Break larger work into smaller tasks, lead the design of features and services in the team's area, and write short design documents that other engineers can review.
Healthcare data exchange
Build and maintain integrations and transactions that use HL7, FHIR, and X12 EDI, following the company's interoperability and architecture standards.
Legacy modernization
Contribute to modernizing legacy functionality. Move screens and functions to new services and a new front end, confirm that the new behavior matches the existing behavior by using automated tests, and release changes in small steps.
Code quality
Write clear, tested code. Review the code of other engineers and give specific, respectful feedback. Help keep code organized, automated, and easy to change.
Performance and data
Apply data modeling techniques, review the performance of code and database queries, and make improvements when measurements show a problem.
Security, PHI, and accessibility
Apply secure coding practices, protect PHI, follow HIPAA requirements, and build user interfaces that meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
Production support
Investigate and resolve defects and incidents in the services the team owns, and document the cause and the fix.
AI-assisted development
Use AI coding tools responsibly. Review and test all AI-generated code before it is merged, and never enter PHI or other protected data into tools that the company has not approved.
Mentorship
Coach less experienced engineers through code reviews, pairing, and design discussions.
Collaboration
Work with Product Managers, Product Owners, Quality Assurance, and other engineers to clarify requirements, estimate work, and report progress and risks clearly.
Standards
Follow the team and company engineering standards, and propose improvements when a standard does not work well in practice.
