About HOH. HOH is a multi-discipline architecture and engineering firm serving transit, transportation and public infrastructure clients. Our team of about 70 people across seven departments delivers work for agencies such as CTA, Metra, Pace, the Illinois Tollway, IDOT and Chicago-area municipalities.
Electrical engineering supports stations, maintenance and operations facilities, administrative buildings and infrastructure projects across that portfolio.
Key responsibilities
Technical leadership
- Serve as Engineer of Record for electrical systems on building and facility projects, from planning and schematic design through construction documents and closeout.
- Lead design of power distribution, service entrance and switchgear, emergency and standby power (generators, ATS, UPS), lighting and lighting controls, fire alarm, grounding and lightning protection, and low-voltage/communications infrastructure.
- Perform or oversee load calculations, short-circuit, protective device coordination and arc flash studies.
- Apply NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 72, NFPA 101, NFPA 110, NFPA 130, the Chicago Electrical Code, IECC/ASHRAE 90.1 and agency design standards.
- Run quality control on electrical deliverables and coordinate closely with architecture, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, civil and systems disciplines.
- Support construction phase services: submittal and RFI review, site observation, punch lists and commissioning support.
Department management
- Manage the electrical department's staff, workload, schedules and budgets across concurrent projects.
- Hire, mentor and develop engineers and designers, including EIT-to-PE progression.
- Set and maintain department standards, details, specifications and CAD/BIM practices.
- Track and report department KPIs such as utilization, budget performance and QA/QC results.
Clients and business development
- Serve as a technical lead and client contact for public agency and private clients.
- Prepare scopes, fee estimates, level-of-effort and staffing plans, and the electrical portions of QBS proposals and interviews.
- Identify opportunities to expand HOH's electrical practice, including traction power, substation and other infrastructure work.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Illinois, or the ability to obtain Illinois licensure by comity within 6 months of hire.
- 10+ years of electrical design experience for buildings, with at least 3 years supervising engineers or designers.
- Demonstrated experience as Engineer of Record on projects of varied size and complexity.
- Working knowledge of the NEC, NFPA life safety standards and energy codes, and how they apply in the City of Chicago and surrounding jurisdictions.
- Experience preparing fee proposals and managing project budgets and schedules.
- Clear written and verbal communication with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred qualifications
Candidates with electrical infrastructure experience beyond buildings will stand out, especially in any of these areas:
- Substations: utility or customer-owned medium- and high-voltage substation design, including physical layout, protection and control, and grounding grid design (IEEE 80).
- Transmission and distribution: overhead and underground line design, duct banks and coordination with utilities such as ComEd.
- Rail and transit: traction power substations, DC traction power distribution (third rail or catenary), stray current and corrosion control, and NFPA 130 station and tunnel systems.
- Industrial: process power, motor control centers, VFDs, hazardous location classification and plant power distribution.
Also valued:
- Master's degree in Electrical or Power Engineering.
