=======================================================
Honolulu, HI
Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children is Hawai'i’s only full-service children’s specialty hospital and the state’s only maternity, newborn, and pediatric specialty hospital. Widely recognized as Hawai'i’s leader in the care of women, infants, and children, the 253-bed, not-for-profit medical center delivers over 5,000 babies each year and serves as a major teaching and research facility.
Kapi'olani is recognized for its expertise in caring for high-risk pregnancies, with a team of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians who provide specialized care for mothers and babies facing complex medical conditions.
Kapi'olani is home to Hawai'i’s largest and most advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the state’s only Pediatric Congenital Heart Program, and Hawai'i’s only pediatric bone marrow collection and transplant program, where approximately 95% of patients participate in clinical trials.
In 2025, Kapi'olani’s Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Transplant Program earned accreditation in cellular therapy from the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB), recognizing the program’s commitment to meeting rigorous national standards for quality and patient care.
The hospital is also home to Hawai'i’s only dedicated breast health and gynecologic cancer centers and was the first facility on O'ahu to be designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
Since 1984, Kapi'olani has been Hawai'i’s only Children’s Miracle Network hospital and has earned numerous national recognitions, including Gold Level Center of Excellence designation from ELSO, top-tier national patient experience rankings, Joint Commission reaccreditations, Level 3 Pediatric Trauma Center and Level 1 Children’s Surgical Verification recertifications from the American College of Surgeons, and the 2025 Starlight Children’s Foundation Hospital of the Year Award.
More than 1,400 employees and over 700 physicians provide exceptional care through specialty programs including the Kapi'olani Women’s Center, Women’s Cancer Center, Kapi'olani Child Protection Center, Sex Abuse Treatment Center, and numerous pediatric specialty clinics, serving families throughout Hawai'i and the Pacific.
The Family Birth Center at Kapi'olani is dedicated to providing quality, comprehensive and family-centered obstetrical care, specializing in high-risk and high-volume labor and delivery. This department is composed of the Labor & Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum and Nursery units and provides tertiary, level III perinatal services as well as obstetrical care for antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum patients.
The team of professional staff at the Family Birth Center supports and educates patients and families to facilitate the optimal health of both mothers and newborns.
This opportunity is for the experienced nurse who has a desire to become a Labor and Delivery Nurse, without previous perinatal nursing experience.
This program is designed to support the learner throughout the transition process from novice to advanced beginner and consists of a blended learning approach which incorporates the following integral components: didactic instruction, preceptor based clinical practicum, AWHONN Perinatal Orientation Education Program online modules, case-based simulation training, and rotations to various specialty areas.
All training methodologies are geared towards enhancing the learner’s exposure to different populations of perinatal patients with varying compound health problems and towards developing relationships among the multidisciplinary health care team. The program will be 16 weeks in duration and will require a two-year residency/work commitment upon successful completion.
The outcome of this training will provide the nurse with the opportunity to provide comprehensive care to perinatal patients throughout the labor and delivery spectrum.
