As a Systems Engineer II , you’ll deliver moderately complex systems solutions. You’ll test, maintain, implement, and contribute to the design of systems related to H-E-B infrastructure business processes, operations, and systems, and ensure the highest levels of availability, performance, and security.

What is the work?

Secure, Innovate, Design &

Develop With Moderate Supervision

  • Contributes to scoping and designing infrastructure and security solutions in alignment with approved technology roadmaps; evaluates options, security implications, tradeoffs, and impacts on adjacent systems, and recommends design changes when needed
  • Analyzes, evaluates, tests, debugs, and implements operating systems, databases, utilities software, or system management tools on an ongoing basis to ensure business needs are met
  • Develops, tests, reviews and maintains code and infrastructure as code to automate infrastructure and security operations, reduce manual effort, improve reliability, and enable secure self-service capabilities
  • Contributes to unit and functional automated testing of custom code
  • Integrates and configures existing platforms, services and tools to meet business and technical needs
  • Uses source control and CI/CD practices to deliver and maintain infrastructure changes
  • Consumes APIs to integrate systems and automate workflows
  • Monitors system health and performance; investigates technical and security issues, identifies root causes, and implements fixes within scope, collaborating with other teams or escalating when needed.
  • Secures cloud and on-premises infrastructure by applying industry best practices and following security, testing, documentation, and change-management practices throughout implementation and operations.
  • Contributes to solution design by evaluating existing capabilities, documenting requirements and tradeoffs, and recommending an approach
  • Operates independently with assistance from more experienced engineers as needed; work is reviewed to ensure key objectives are met
  • Communicates risks, blockers, operational changes and service-level concerns to relevant teams and stakeholders
  • Diagnose and fix complex technical and security issues, independently and alongside a motivated team
  • Collaborates with infrastructure and application teams on cross-functional, multi-system initiatives from design through delivery, contributing technical expertise to improve security, the user and administrator experience, and end-to-end service reliability for H-E-B customers.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies for potential adoption, and recommend improvements to team processes and tools based on industry standards
  • Communicate development status, risks, and concerns to leadership, and maintain standards, documentation, and training across our technology stacks and security processes

What is your background?

  • A related degree or comparable formal training, certification, or work experience preferred
  • 2+ years of related systems experience preferred
  • 2+ years in cyber security and infrastructure administration, including security services such as patching, configuration hardening, antimalware, encryption/cryptography, and vulnerability assessment/remediation
  • 2+ years each with Infrastructure as Code; scripting/development in Python (or similar); CI/CD (e.g., GitLab Runner, Jenkins); and automation tools (Terraform or Ansible)

Who You Are… You Have

  • Working knowledge of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, and of Windows, macOS, and other relevant operating systems
  • Working understanding of infrastructure and security administration practices, including patching, configuration hardening, endpoint protection, encryption, and vulnerability assessment and remediation
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and automation tools such as Terraform or Ansible and can write and maintain scripts or code using Python or a similar language
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Intermediate time management and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work efficiently with moderate supervision in a fast-paced technical environment with increasing support demands and complexity
  • Ability to manage multiple, more complex priorities and assigned tasks to meet deadlines and objectives
  • Ability to collaborate and confidently share ideas with the team
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgement to apply technical principles to assigned projects. Exercises judgement within defined procedures and practices
  • Communicates clearly and constructively with internal and external stakeholders, adapting to the audience and situation; explains technical ideas and project status, and promptly raises risks and blockers.
  • An ownership mentality with a track record of high-quality results, operating independently with support from others as needed
  • Experience as a technical resource on highly visible, cross-functional projects, owning an area of expertise
  • A passion for customer service, digital security, and staying ahead of emerging security technologies
  • Experience with macOS and Windows endpoint management tools such as JAMF, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Configuration Manager
  • A solid grounding in secure system architecture, design patterns, and common security frameworks (NIST, ISO 27001/2, ITIL, COBIT)
  • Experience operating in public cloud (Azure, GCP, or AWS) as well as on-premise private cloud and VM server environments
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Jira, Confluence, and ServiceNow
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, increasingly complex environment, with occasional extended hours
