About this role

Description

What You'll Do:

Working at the intersection of applied geotechnical engineering, analytical instrumentation, and product development, you will work closely with other product managers and lead the geotechnical workstream, a technical team working on key components of GeologicAI’s industry-leading scanning systems.

You will be responsible for delivering product scoping, prioritization, and definitions of “done” to ensure at-pace product development and commercial rollout. Beyond execution, you will contribute to higher-level product strategy: shaping long-term roadmaps, identifying market opportunities, and ensuring the geotechnical workstream advances GeologicAI’s competitive position.

Focused on translating high-resolution core imaging and multi-sensor analytical systems into defensible, repeatable, and commercial geotechnical products (structural and defect logging, rock strength characterization, weathering and alteration profiling, and rock mass classification), you will embrace the complexities of automated measurement and how those impact our products and our clients.

What We'll Love About You

As a senior hire with experience leading technical teams, you will not only understand but embrace the complexities of automated geotechnical characterization, and how machine-derived structural, strength, and rock mass data can both outperform and disagree with conventional manual logging.

You will bring a strategic mindset to product decisions, connecting technical depth with business outcomes, while continuously developing your leadership capabilities and elevating the team around you.### Key Responsibilities

Product Development* Work with clients and internal teams to establish and prioritise geotechnical product requirements, including imaging and sensor data quality requirements, structural picking and orientation pipelines, strength and rock mass classification workflows, validation methods, and development cadence.

  • Own the existing product canvas for the future of geotechnical characterisation, maintaining and evolving it as the product moves from current state to final vision, and updating it as understanding improves.
  • Define and drive higher-level product strategy for the geotechnical workstream, translating business goals and market signals into a coherent, prioritized roadmap that balances near-term delivery with long-term competitive differentiation.
  • Influence, coordinate, and prioritize projects across the geotechnical workstream, ensuring the team is focused on the critical path with minimal distraction.
  • Establish technical positioning with respect to competitors in the automated geotechnical logging and rock mass characterization space, and work with internal teams to recommend strategy and resourcing. Contribute to higher-level strategic planning by identifying emerging trends, capability gaps, and opportunities that shape the multi-year product roadmap.
  • Prototype geotechnical algorithms and workflows (fracture and defect detection, RQD and fracture frequency, discontinuity orientation and roughness, strength proxies) to initiate and accelerate product development in key areas.
  • Directly engage with prediction model development in coordination with data scientists and software developers, bringing domain judgement to decisions about geotechnical plausibility, validation adequacy, and readiness to move from research to product.
  • Recruit into the workstream to support project demand and deliverables. Actively develop team members through mentorship, structured feedback, and growth opportunities, building a workstream that scales in capability as well as headcount.

Business Development & Client

Support* Determine and convey the potential value of automated geotechnical outputs (structural, strength, and rock mass data) for slope and underground stability design, mine planning, ground support optimization, and geotechnical risk management.

  • Support product development update meetings, often in the form of collaborative technical discussion and review with client geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists.
  • Work with academic institutions and third parties to build pertinent relationships advancing automated geotechnical characterization and rock mechanics knowledge.

Project Execution* Assist with the scoping of geotechnical logging, rock mass classification, and strength prediction workflows.

  • Perform critical review of client-provided geotechnical data and generated outputs for engineering sense and analytical integrity.
  • Collaborate with the Product Manager, Geology and the Product Manager, Geometallurgy and RMS team on geological, resource and geotechnical domain models.
  • Design and oversee validation studies across scales, from individual defect and discontinuity picks through to drill-hole scale rock mass domains and laboratory strength testing, for data reconciliation, product applicability, and confirmation of measurement behaviour.
  • Perform, or supervise, the development of calibration and prediction models for geotechnical attributes based on core imaging and fused scanning data, ensuring inputs are appropriate, model behaviour is geotechnically interpretable, and uncertainty is explicitly carried through to outputs.

Travel Requirements:* Travel is required for this position up to 20% of the time, including client meetings and site visits

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Must Have Skills, Education, and Experience:* Degree in geological engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, rock mechanics, or a closely related field. Professional registration (P.Eng., P.Geo., or equivalent) is an asset.

  • Experience converting research and development work to commercial product.
  • Experience leading technical teams through ambiguous R&D-to-product translation work, where requirements emerge from the work itself rather than from a handed-down specification.
  • Project management and collaborative skills to focus and priortize critial work first. Guide teams with clear goals and KPIs where needed. Demonstrated ability to develop and mentor team members, foster a high-performing team culture, and grow leadership capabilities in yourself and others over time.
  • A track record of leading projects and teams to make decisions under uncertainty: knowing when to push for more validation and when to ship, when to simplify and when simplification would undermine the product's integrity.
  • Strong working knowledge of geotechnical core logging and rock mass characterisation - RQD, fracture frequency, discontinuity orientation, roughness and infill, weathering and alteration, and classification systems such as RMR, Q, and GSI. Understand what each parameter is intended to capture, and where and why it breaks down.
  • Experience with the differences between what automated imaging and sensor systems measure on intact core and what a geotechnical engineer records by hand or a laboratory measures on prepared specimens, and the implications for calibration and validation.
  • Familiarity with laboratory rock strength and index testing (UCS, point load, Brazilian tensile, triaxial) and their use as validation datasets, including an understanding of their own limitations.
  • Enough technical coding literacy to review notebooks critically and engage meaningfully with modelling choices.
  • Existing networks in the geotechnical, rock mechanics, or mining engineering space, through conferences, publications, or industry collaboration.

Assets:* Prior experience mining industry for a major producer or consulting company

  • Technical coding and model building capabilities is an asset
