About this role

Lead Electrical Engineer – Embedded Systems & Firmware

Company: FireAvert, LLC Location: Mapleton, Utah Position: Full-Time Experience: 7+ Years Reports To: Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

About FireAvert:

FireAvert is a growing technology company focused on developing innovative fire prevention and safety solutions. Our products combine electrical engineering, embedded systems, wireless communication, and smart technology to help prevent fires and protect lives and property.

As we continue to expand our product portfolio and engineering capabilities, we're looking for an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to help drive the next generation of FireAvert products.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Lead Electrical Engineer with a strong background in electrical hardware design and embedded firmware development.

This individual will take primary technical ownership of FireAvert's electrical engineering efforts, including circuit design, PCB development, embedded systems architecture, firmware development, testing, troubleshooting, and product certification support.

For several years, FireAvert has partnered with an external engineering consulting firm to handle much of our electrical hardware and firmware development. A major objective of this role is to progressively bring these engineering capabilities in-house, establishing stronger internal technical ownership while maintaining strategic relationships with outside engineering partners where appropriate.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished electrical engineer who is equally comfortable developing hardware, working with embedded firmware, solving complex technical problems, and leading other engineers.

This position will also provide technical leadership and mentorship to our existing electrical engineering team and work closely with mechanical engineering, software development, manufacturing, and executive leadership.

Electrical Hardware

Design & Development

  • Lead the electrical design and development of FireAvert's existing and future products.
  • Design, review, and troubleshoot electrical schematics, PCB layouts, and electronic assemblies.
  • Develop and maintain embedded hardware architectures incorporating microcontrollers, sensors, power supplies, wireless communication modules, and switching or control circuits.
  • Oversee component selection, electrical BOMs, design documentation, and hardware revisions.
  • Identify and implement improvements in product reliability, performance, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and resolve complex electrical hardware failures.
  • Support electrical safety evaluations, regulatory testing, and product certification efforts.

Embedded Firmware Development:

  • Provide technical ownership of firmware architecture and development across FireAvert's embedded products.
  • Develop, maintain, review, and troubleshoot embedded firmware, primarily in C/C++.
  • Work with microcontrollers, communication interfaces, peripheral devices, and embedded communication protocols.
  • Collaborate with cloud and software engineers to ensure reliable integration between embedded devices and connected platforms.
  • Establish firmware development, testing, version control, and release management practices.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues involving interactions between hardware, firmware, and connected systems.

Technical Leadership & Engineering Ownership:

  • Serve as FireAvert's primary internal technical authority for electrical engineering and embedded systems.
  • Lead electrical and firmware development projects from concept through production.
  • Progressively assume ownership of engineering responsibilities currently managed by external consulting partners.
  • Evaluate which engineering activities should be handled internally and which are best supported through specialized outside resources.
  • Coordinate with external engineering consultants, providing technical direction and reviewing deliverables.
  • Mentor and provide day-to-day technical guidance to junior electrical engineers.
  • Establish engineering standards, documentation practices, design review processes, and long-term architectural direction.
  • Partner with the CTO to prioritize engineering initiatives, allocate technical resources, and develop product roadmaps.

Product Validation & Manufacturing

Support:

  • Develop and oversee electrical and firmware validation procedures.
  • Support product safety certification and compliance testing.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to improve production processes, test fixtures, and product reliability.
  • Investigate field failures and manufacturing issues, implementing corrective design improvements.
  • Ensure designs are maintainable, manufacturable, scalable, and adequately documented.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of professional electrical engineering experience, with substantial hands-on hardware design responsibility.
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design, schematic capture, PCB design, and component selection.
  • Demonstrated experience bringing electronic products from initial concept through production.
  • Professional experience developing or maintaining embedded firmware using C/C++.
  • Strong understanding of microcontrollers, embedded peripherals, and common communication interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, and similar protocols.
  • Proficiency using electrical laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and related debugging tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex problems spanning electrical hardware and embedded firmware.
  • Experience coordinating technical projects, reviewing engineering work, or providing technical mentorship.
  • Strong technical documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability and willingness to remain deeply involved in hands-on engineering work while providing technical leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing AC mains-powered products, power supplies, switching circuits, relays, or electromechanical control systems.
  • Experience with wireless and IoT technologies such as LoRaWAN, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.
  • Familiarity with electrical product safety standards, UL/ETL certification processes, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience developing safety-critical or high-reliability electronic products.
  • Experience with embedded firmware architecture, bootloaders, firmware updates, and hardware abstraction layers.
  • Familiarity with PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar EDA software.
  • Experience designing manufacturing test fixtures and automated electronic test systems.
  • Prior technical leadership experience within a small or growing engineering organization.
  • Experience transitioning product development activities from external consultants to internal engineering teams.

What Success Looks Like

Within the first 3 months:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of FireAvert's existing electrical hardware, firmware, product architectures, and engineering processes.
  • Establish strong working relationships with internal engineering staff and external development partners.
  • Begin independently troubleshooting existing hardware and firmware issues.
  • Identify opportunities to bring engineering activities in-house.

Within the first 6 months:

  • Assume direct technical ownership of key electrical engineering projects.
  • Independently execute hardware revisions and contribute meaningfully to firmware development.
  • Provide consistent technical leadership and mentorship to the existing electrical engineering team.
  • Establish improvements in engineering documentation, design reviews, and development processes.

Within the first 12 months:

  • Serve as the primary internal owner of FireAvert's electrical hardware and embedded firmware architectures.
  • Independently lead most routine electrical hardware development, troubleshooting, and product maintenance activities.
  • Significantly reduce the company's reliance on external consultants for day-to-day electrical and embedded engineering work.
  • Lead new electrical engineering projects from concept through validation and production.
  • Build a scalable foundation for FireAvert's long-term internal electrical engineering capabilities.

Why Join FireAvert?

This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of electrical engineering within a growing product-focused company.

Unlike positions where engineers are responsible for only a small portion of a product, this role offers the opportunity to influence the full product lifecycle, from initial architecture and circuit design to embedded firmware, manufacturing, certification, and real-world deployment.

You'll work directly with the CTO, help shape the future of FireAvert's engineering organization, mentor developing engineers, and contribute to products designed to prevent fires and protect lives.

We're looking for someone who is a self-starter, who enjoys solving difficult engineering problems, takes pride in owning their designs, and wants to make a lasting impact on both the products and the company behind them.
