About the role
EXIGIS builds risk management software for Fortune 100 clients in commercial insurance and surety. This is a hands-on production role, not a pure feature-building role: you'll split time between live customer/support issues, reporting work, and new feature development on our core platform. You'll work directly with our CTO during onboarding to get fluent in the systems before taking on independent ownership.
What you'll do
- Handle day-to-day production work: customer-reported issues, data/report requests, bug triage and fixes on our live multi-tenant Rails application
- Write and troubleshoot real SQL against production data to answer customer and internal reporting requests — this is a regular, not occasional, part of the job
- Build new features end-to-end: schema, backend logic, API, frontend stack
- Work within our GitHub/CI-CD pipeline (three-tier branch flow: dev → staging → main) to ship safely to a live client-facing system
- Use Python for scripting, automation, and data/migration tasks
- Operate within controlled production access — you will not have unrestricted prod access on day one; access is granted incrementally as you demonstrate familiarity with the system
- Contribute occasionally to our Azure-hosted AI document-extraction platform (RiskWorks BackOffice — GPT-4o, Document Intelligence, Cosmos DB) as that side of the business grows, though Rails/Heroku is the primary application you'll own
Requirements
- ~5 years professional software engineering experience, including real production support responsibility (not just greenfield feature work)
- Strong hands-on Ruby on Rails experience — ActiveRecord, background jobs, testing, debugging production issues
- Prior experience working in a multi-tenant software system — you should already understand the concept and its failure modes (data isolation, tenant-scoped queries, noisy-neighbor issues); we will not be teaching this concept from scratch on a live client system
- Strong, independent SQL ability — comfortable writing non-trivial queries against production data for reporting and diagnostics, not just via an ORM
- Comfortable scripting in Python for automation/data tasks
- Practical Git/GitHub and CI/CD experience
- Full-stack: backend in Rails
- Strong analytical/debugging ability — can trace an issue through a live system under some time pressure, since this role includes customer-facing production support
Strong plus, not required
- Elasticsearch or another search/indexing system
- Exposure to Azure or another cloud platform
- Experience in a regulated/compliance-sensitive industry (fintech, insurtech, healthtech)
- Experience with legacy system modernization
First 90 days — what success looks like
- Days 1–30: Onboarded to EXIGIS’ architecture (Rails/Postgres/Elasticsearch/Heroku) and the deployment workflow; shadowing production issues and report requests with the CTO; read-only/limited production access
- Days 30–60: Independently resolving low-to-medium complexity production issues and customer report requests; shipping small features through the full CI/CD pipeline with review; production access expanded per demonstrated competence
- Days 60–90: Owning a defined slice of production support (a rotation or a customer segment) with minimal oversight; contributing to at least one non-trivial feature end-to-end; able to write and validate SQL-based reports without hand-holding
