About this role
About The Role
The role builds the backend services that power user-facing products at scale - REST and GraphQL APIs, event-driven pipelines, and the data models underneath them. Day-to-day work spans API design, database schema decisions, caching strategies, and the reliability engineering that keeps systems up when traffic spikes. This is a hands-on role on a small, senior team shipping features weekly.
The backend here isn't a CRUD wrapper: it processes high-volume events, enforces correctness under concurrency, and directly shapes what product engineers can build on the frontend and mobile clients.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and operate production backend services in Python, Go, or Node.js, owning them from development through deployment and on-call Architect and evolve REST and GraphQL APIs consumed by web and mobile clients, with strong contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility Model and optimize data stores - PostgreSQL schema design, query tuning, Redis caching layers, and message queues like Kafka or SQS Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code on AWS or GCP (Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes) Instrument services with observability tooling - Datadog or Grafana metrics, structured logging, distributed tracing - and drive down latency and error budgets Lead design reviews and code reviews, setting standards for testing, documentation, and system architecture Partner with product managers and frontend/mobile engineers to scope features, flag technical risks early, and ship iteratively What We Are Looking For 3–7 years of backend software engineering experience, including at least 2 years building and operating services in production at meaningful scale Deep proficiency in at least one backend language: Python, Go, Java, or Node.js/TypeScript Strong relational database fundamentals: schema design, indexing, transactions, and query optimization in PostgreSQL or MySQL Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes or ECS) Track record of designing clean APIs and owning systems end-to-end, including paging through production incidents and postmortems BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience Bonus: experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, Kinesis), GraphQL federation, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), or having contributed to open-source infrastructure projects
