About this role
Are you a student-centric designer who is an iterative prototyper and systems builder? As an information architect, do you treat navigation as a pedagogical decision? Do you enjoy collaborating in a high-standards, psychologically safe environment?
Then keep reading below for this Learning Experience Designer opportunity!
ASU EdPlus is a dynamic unit of Arizona State University focused on the design and scalable delivery of digital teaching and learning models to increase student success and reduce barriers to achievement in higher education. We advance the economic, social, cultural, and overall health of the local, national, and international communities served by ASU.

We are seeking a Learning Experience Designer (LXD) to join our innovative EdPlus Digital Learning team. For background: when students describe an online course they liked, the word they use most often is “organized.” When they describe one they struggled with, the word is “confusing.” Neither judgment is about content quality.
Both are about design: what the course looks like, how it reads, whether the path through it is obvious, and whether the first ten minutes make sense.
As a senior individual contributor, every day you will make a difference in the lives of others by bringing UX-grade design practice to the surface of the learning experience. You own typography, hierarchy, color, layout, page architecture, navigation, and wayfinding across the portfolio.
You will research with students, build mockups, run usability tests, and build the pattern libraries that let dozens of designers produce consistent work.
You will work within a highly collaborative, cross-functional studio model, designing alongside data scientists, user experience researchers, product managers, learning assessment leads, multimedia producers, and visionary faculty. This is a role where design is treated as a core pedagogical decision, supported by a rich peer ecosystem.
Essential Duties
Visual Craft and Information Design
- Own the visual and information design standard across EDL's course portfolio: typography, hierarchy, color, iconography, spacing, and layout systems.
- Design module, page, and course-level information architecture so that navigation, wayfinding, sequence, and progress are obvious to a student without an orientation video.
- Produce wireframes, mockups, and prototypes for course interfaces, iterate against usability findings and efficacy evidence, and deliver specifications others can build from.
- Partner with multimedia teams on the visual through-line between produced video and on-page design, holding WCAG 2.1 AA as a design constraint.
High-Leverage Experience
Design
- Define and prove signature experience patterns for priority moments (e.g., course opening), specifying the sequence, cues, and early checkpoints that make a moment work.
- Design, prototype, and prove repeatable patterns for each priority moment so that what is learned in a few courses transfers across the portfolio.
- Define what success looks like for each pattern before it ships, measure it with UX Research and Action Lab, and recommend when to move effort to the next target.
Design Systems, Standards, and Evidence
- Build and govern the component, pattern, and template libraries that let EDL's designers produce visually consistent, high-quality courses at portfolio scale.
- Establish and run design critique as a recurring practice where work in progress is improved rather than defended.
- Partner with UX Research on usability testing, first-click and navigation testing, and student interviews, analyzing learner feedback and course analytics to find where students stall or disengage.
- Assume or coordinate other duties or projects as assigned or directed.
NOTE
This is an in-person, hybrid position. You must be able to reliably commute to Scottsdale AZ.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.
- Demonstrated skill producing wireframes and low- and high-fidelity mockups in tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Experience conducting user research (moderated usability testing, interviews, surveys) and iterating designs based on findings.
- Experience building and governing a design system or pattern library used by multiple designers.
- Demonstrated practical application of WCAG 2.1 AA and Universal Design for Learning in production work, plus working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
- Evidence of fluency in learning science (cognitive load theory, multimedia learning principles, backward design).
- One to two examples of your visual and information design work, such as an online portfolio, PDF, or small section of annotated screenshots, may be required.
NOTE
Please answer the following questions in your cover letter:
- Describe an interface or information architecture you designed that measurably improved usability. How did you know it was successful?
- Describe a time you changed a design based on what you learned from user research rather than stakeholder opinions.
