About this role

1. Position Description

Founded in 1983, Diagnosys is an inventor-owned private company devoted to the field of ophthalmic electrophysiology. Our pioneering customizable platforms are available for both human and animal testing. All our platforms provide the broadest stimulus range, highest test repeatability, most sensitive amplifiers, and most customizable software the industry has to offer.

We collaborate closely with researchers and clinicians to create and validate new test procedures for the benefit of patient care.

We are seeking a versatile and highly skilled Electrical Engineer with 5 to 10 years of experience to lead analog and power supply design for our highly sensitive medical diagnostic instrumentation. As a critical member of our small, cross-functional engineering team, you will drive the development of low-noise electrical systems from concept through to schematic capture and PCBA layout.

While your primary focus will be on analog and power domains, you will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with our existing digital and firmware engineer, providing support and expanding your skills in those areas based on your interest and capabilities.

You will thrive in our dynamic lab environment, enthusiastically wearing multiple hats to push R&D forward. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on hardware development, designing custom shielded electrical cables, integrating optical components, and developing automated calibration and testing protocols.

You will also directly participate in running electroretinography (ERG) and virtual reality (VR) visual testing experiments, translating firsthand laboratory feedback into robust, compliant, and manufacturable hardware designs.

2. Responsibilities

  • Analog & Power Supply Design: Design, simulate, and validate low-noise analog circuits, signal conditioning front-ends, and reliable power supply architectures for precision ophthalmic diagnostic devices.
  • PCBA Layout & Routing: Perform schematic capture and Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) layout, preferably utilizing Altium Designer, ensuring optimal signal integrity, thermal management, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Digital & Firmware Collaboration: Partner with the dedicated digital design and firmware engineer to review architectures and provide development support on microcontrollers, USB HID integrations, or digital logic as capabilities and interest allow.
  • Cable & Interconnect Design: Design, specify, and test custom multi-pin shielded electrical cables and wiring harnesses (e.g., utilizing push-pull connectors) to ensure tactile flexibility and robust signal fidelity in clinical settings.
  • Lab Automation & Testing: Develop and automate testing, calibration, and validation procedures for electrical and optical sub-systems to streamline manufacturing and quality control.
  • Experimental Support: Actively assist in setting up, calibrating, and running ERG, functional vision, and VR experiments in the lab to validate hardware performance and support clinical research initiatives.
  • Cross-Functional Integration: Coordinate with mechanical, optical, and software engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of electronics, displays, sensors, and user interface elements.
  • Design Controls & Quality Compliance: Generate design control documentation and drawings under ISO 13485 and MDSAP, including engineering change orders and component specifications.

3. Education

  • Required: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited university.

4. Requirements & Technical Skills

  • Analog & Power Expertise: Strong fundamental knowledge of low-noise analog circuit design, filtering, amplification of micro-volt biological signals, and power supply design.
  • PCB Design Tools: Proficiency in schematic capture and PCBA layout, with a strong preference for experience using Altium Designer.
  • Hands-On Prototyping: Comfortable working in a laboratory setting with test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, soldering stations) to prototype, test, and troubleshoot boards and custom cabling.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Aptitude: Demonstrated interest or hands-on experience in adjacent disciplines such as optical design integration, lab automation scripting (e.g., MATLAB, Python), and clinical experiment execution.
  • Digital/Firmware Familiarity: Willingness and baseline ability to interface with digital electronics, read embedded C/C++ firmware, or support digital hardware design is highly advantageous.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong technical writing and communication skills; ability to document technical work clearly for regulatory compliance and collaborate seamlessly across R&D, Quality, and Operations teams.

5. Experience

  • 5-10 years of direct electrical engineering experience in product development, ideally within the medical device, diagnostic instrument, optical hardware, or life science industries.
  • Demonstrated experience taking complex analog and PCBA designs through the full development lifecycle—from early-stage conceptualization through verification testing and production release.
  • Familiarity with medical device quality and safety standards (ISO 13485, IEC 60601-1) is desirable.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year

Benefits:
