About this role
CQ&A Consulting is one of the nation’s leading specialized compliance consulting firms serving winery and beverage alcohol clients across the United States. Established in 2003, our team supports wineries, distillers, and importers with indirect tax compliance, licensing, regulatory reporting, and operational compliance requirements in a highly detailed, deadline-driven environment.
As our business continues to grow, we are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Tax Compliance Manager to take a lead role on our indirect tax and beverage alcohol compliance team. This is a working lead position for a compliance professional who will stay hands-on with filings while mentoring newer team members and keeping the team’s workload on track.
You will personally prepare and file a full share of monthly compliance work, and you will also review, coach, and support the team members you work alongside.
This role is built to grow. For the right person, it is a path to leading our tax function and helping shape how we scale as the business expands.
This is a full-time position based in Roanoke, Texas. While this is a primarily onsite role, limited hybrid flexibility of 1–2 remote workdays per week may be available after successful onboarding, based on workload, operational needs, and comfort with recurring reporting cycles and filing deadlines.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation: $80,000–$95,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and overall fit.
Benefits & Perks:
- Three weeks of paid vacation annually (excluding January due to peak filing season operational requirements)
- Additional paid office closure between Christmas and New Year’s (separate from PTO)
- Monthly health insurance stipend (in lieu of a group plan)
- Potential hybrid flexibility after onboarding
- Real opportunity for long-term growth within a rapidly expanding specialized compliance business
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare, file, and reconcile high-volume sales tax, excise tax, direct-to-consumer shipping reports, and wholesale tax filings for winery and beverage alcohol clients across multiple jurisdictions
- Generate and review reports from ShipCompliant and related systems, and investigate discrepancies, reporting variances, filing exceptions, and data inconsistencies before submission
- Apply state-specific reporting and filing requirements, including formatting data and making report adjustments needed to meet state filing specifications
- Serve as the team’s go-to resource and mentor: train and coach newer team members, answer process questions, and review their filings and backup documentation for accuracy and completeness
- Assign and balance daily and monthly workloads across the team, and keep recurring filing deadlines on track using ClickUp and related workflow tools
- Maintain audit-ready documentation and filing records in Google Drive and internal systems, and help improve procedures and workflow efficiency
- Communicate professionally with clients and internal teams on missing information, filing issues, notice resolution, account maintenance, registrations, and special projects
- Work directly with ownership to raise issues, improve processes, and help plan how the team grows
Ideal Qualifications
- 3+ years of accounting, tax compliance, indirect tax, or sales tax experience, including preparing high-volume recurring filings
- Experience training, mentoring, or reviewing the work of others, or a clear interest in developing that skill; formal supervisory experience is a plus but not required
- Exceptional attention to detail, strong reconciliation and problem-solving skills, and the ability to catch errors before filing
- Self-starter with strong ownership, dependability, and professional follow-through
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a customer-focused approach
- Proficiency with spreadsheets, Adobe Pro, Google Drive, Google Docs, and online state filing portals; ClickUp or similar workflow tools preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred
- Experience with ShipCompliant, beverage alcohol compliance, or other regulatory reporting systems is a plus but not required
Ideal Fit
This role is ideal for an ambitious compliance professional who takes pride in accuracy, enjoys helping others get better at their work, and wants to grow into a leadership role. The right person leads by example, is dependable under deadline pressure, and is excited to build a team and a tax function alongside the owner of a growing business.
