About this role

Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.

**Computerway Food Systems (CFS)** provides purpose\-built, computer\-controlled weighing, labeling, and tracking systems for food processing companies. CFS systems are engineered into each customer’s production environment using professional services, hardware, and software.

We work in protein and poultry plants. This is production software: live floors, real operational risk, and customers.

**Location:** High Point, NC — on\-site, Monday–Friday (core hours). Occasional travel to customer plants or other CFS sites.

Reports to

Software Development Manager

**Type:** Senior individual contributor (no direct reports)

**Experience:** 10\+ years professional software development

**The opportunity**

A large part of this role is redevelopment of legacy applications—not only keeping existing systems alive. You will help replace and modernize plant and corporate software (including Progress\-era applications, older JavaScript UI such as AngularJS, and related services) while the current product still has to run in live plants.

If you want substantial, senior\-level rebuild work with real customers and real operational risk, that is the job.

This is a senior full\-stack role. You design, build, and own delivery through production—not only advise. You set technical approach for assigned work, raise the bar in review, mentor people with less experience or gaps, and stay accountable when something breaks in a plant.

You report to the Software Development Manager and take architectural direction from the Senior Architect. You have the opportunity to set the bar for business knowledge, development skill, and engagement.

**What you will do**

  • Work the full stack: UI (HTML/CSS/DOM, browser and related clients), Node.js services and APIs, Microsoft SQL Server, Docker on Linux, plant/corporate messaging, and legacy systems when assigned.
  • Lead and implement legacy redevelopment: new services and UIs, data and API design, migration paths, and keeping plants stable while old and new run together.
  • Own features, incidents, and upgrades from problem through design, implementation, test, review, release, and production support—you still write the code.
  • Set approach for cross\-stack change (UI, API, database, containers, messaging, legacy). Align with PM and the Software Development Manager on scope and risk.
  • Design and tune SQL Server work: schema, normalization, indexing, procedures/views, security, and performance (plans, blocking, deadlocks)
  • Give clear feedback on specifications.
  • Review code constructively and with a goal; reject work that is unsafe to put in a plant. Champion tests, secrets handling, and observability per policy.
  • Lead diagnosis of high\-severity issues (plant down, bad data, messaging failure), with Help Desk, PM, and customer IT as assigned.
  • Estimate honestly; flag schedule, data, and operational risk early.
  • Treat documentation as part of done. Keep technical docs current after you change the system.
  • Provide after\-hours support when scheduled. Own work until it is closed or cleanly handed off.
  • Work on\-site Monday–Friday. Travel occasionally for go\-lives, serious incidents, assessments, or training. On a plant floor you follow visitor and PPE rules.
  • Prefer automation for repeatable work (builds, tests, deploys, checks). Use AI within company policy; you remain responsible for correctness, security, and what ships.

**Must have**

  • **10\+ years** professional software development, with full SDLC ownership: planning, analysis, design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • **JavaScript and TypeScript** at a senior level, including Node.js and package management.
  • Production UI: HTML, CSS, DOM, and at least one of Angular, React, Svelte, or Vue.
  • **Docker**: build, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot containerized applications.
  • **Linux** for development and production: not only a user—comfortable with servers, scripting, security basics, and keeping an environment current.
  • **Microsoft SQL Server** as a core skill: queries, procedures, design (tables, indexes, views), and analyzing slowness and deadlocks. Relational design and an optimization mindset required.
  • **Git** (or equivalent) in a modern team workflow.
  • **Technical leadership** without org\-chart authority: reviews, approach, mentoring, saying no to unsafe work.
  • **Self\-directed.** You own assigned work; production issues do not go silent.
  • Ability to mentor junior developers and peers who have gaps.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; collaborative; does not hoard ideas.
  • Curiosity and a habit of learning the why of the business, not only the ticket.
  • Ability to work on\-site Monday–Friday in High Point, NC.
  • Working literacy of TCP/IP as an application developer (HTTP, how a request gets from client to server).

**Strongly preferred**

  • **REST API** design and implementation in production.
  • A track record of modernizing or replacing legacy systems (not only greenfield).
  • **AngularJS** or other older UI, plus judgment about when to extend it vs replace it.
  • **Pattern\-based** development (you use common patterns on purpose, not by accident).
  • **CI/CD** (GitLab, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or similar). We use GitLab.
  • **Unit tests** with an eye for useful tests, not volume. End\-to\-end tests (Jest, Playwright, Mocha, or similar).
  • Exposure to code scanning (e.g. TruffleHog, SonarQube, Checkmarx, or equivalent).
  • **Observability** (Grafana, Prometheus, or similar).
  • Food manufacturing, WMS, protein/poultry, or other plant\-floor software.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL (e.g. MongoDB, Redis) and when it is—and is not—the right tool.
  • Ticketing in a team tracker (we use GitLab and Redmine today).

**How we work**

Small team, full SDLC under one roof: support, specs, deploy, and production—not only a ticket queue. The domain is protein and poultry plant operations. You will be expected to grow real product and plant knowledge.
