About this role

Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.

COLSA is seeking a Senior UX/UI Designer to support NASA’s Consolidated Applications and Platform Services (NCAPS) contract, specifically supporting NASA’s Aerospace Capabilities Portfolio Office (ACPO) and its Digital Innovation & Integration Service Capability (DIISC) team.

This role will design the interfaces through which NASA’s aeronautics community explores and works with test data, forecasts, financials, and operational data. As the founding UX/UI design role on the team, this position will establish the design practice from the ground up, including user research, personas, a reusable design system, and production-ready designs for data-heavy analytics applications.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates residing in the United States, excluding the following states: AR, CT, DE, HI, IA, KS, MT, NE, NJ, NY, RI, SD, VT, WV, and WY.

Responsibilities:

  • Create the team’s design system from scratch, including components, patterns, standards, and documentation, and maintain it as the source of truth for the team’s UI.
  • Define the team’s user personas from the ground up; plan and conduct user research and translate findings into actionable design decisions.
  • Produce high-fidelity prototypes and production-ready designs for data-heavy analytics applications, including dashboards, data tables, charts, data visualizations, and complex data-exploration workflows.
  • Make complex, technical data clear and usable by selecting appropriate representations for the data and intended audience.
  • Produce user flows, wireframes, and other UX deliverables and present and defend design decisions to the team and stakeholders.
  • Establish the team’s design processes, standards, and tooling and set expectations for design quality across applications.
  • Work closely with engineers, data scientists, analysts, and program staff to translate requirements into usable software.

At COLSA, people are our most valuable resource and centered at our core value. We invite you to unite your talents with opportunity and be a part of our “Family of Professionals!” Learn about our employee-centric culture and benefits here: https://www.colsa.com/culture_benefits

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing data-heavy, analytics-focused software products, such as dashboards, data tables, charts, data visualizations, and data-exploration workflows. A portfolio primarily focused on marketing websites, content pages, branding, graphic design, or general web design does not meet this requirement.
  • Demonstrated strength in data visualization and representing complex or technical data clearly.
  • Proficiency in Figma.
  • Demonstrated experience creating a design system from the ground up, rather than solely working within an existing one.
  • Demonstrated experience defining personas and conducting user research to drive design decisions.
  • Strong attention to detail and clear design reasoning, with the ability to independently own design decisions.
  • U.S. CItizenship required; must be able to undergo background investigation for a position of NASA Public Trust.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data literacy sufficient to understand data structures and sources and design interfaces that fit the data, without requiring data analyst or data scientist expertise.
  • Ability to learn and work with technical or scientific domain concepts and their constraints.

Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. COLSA Corporation is an Equal Opportunity Employer, Minorities/Females/Veterans/Disabled. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin.
