Job Details
The Graphic Designer works closely with the editor in chief and managing editor / content and is directly responsible for shaping the visual appearance and style of The Chanticleer print newspaper. The graphic designer contributes visual content – photos, graphics and news layout – and assists the newspaper staff in the creation of high-quality print and digital news products when necessary.
The person must demonstrate excellence in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, in coordination with print and digital newspaper products. Freehand artistic ability and knowledge of AP style is a plus. The graphic designer is a paid position.
Essential Duties Of Position
- Work with editors and staff on artistic direction of the print products
- Collaborate with leadership team in creating effective designs to present news content
- Serve as the right hand of the editor in chief to ensure production flow of the print paper
- Participate in monthly newspaper distribution
- Handle layout and design for all issues of the newspaper
- Keep consistent typography among the paper
- Design graphics and art for the paper when necessary
- Provide drafts of newspaper pages to the editor for editing in advance of publication/printer deadlines
- Attend meetings held by the newspaper adviser
- Communicate with the Post and Courier to send correct deliverables
- Work with advertising representative in creating ads or graphics when necessary for a client
- Ensure digital assistant has PDF files of newspaper for the digital website
- Meet for the story budget with executive staff to pitch story ideas and discuss design options
- Design spreads and reaches out to photographers or departments to obtain needed photographs
- Maintain electronic archive of issues and posts InDesign files and PDFs to newspaper’s digital archives
- Perform any other pertinent duties as assigned
An evaluation of job duties will be done in March of the spring semester to determine future employment for the following year. This is determined by successful completion of all essential job duties and an evaluation by the adviser.

Required Qualifications
- Must have and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA
- Must be a full-time student (minimum of 12 semester hours) and not on academic or disciplinary probation
- Must be enrolled in ARTD 202 or have already completed the class
- May not hold an elected or appointed position with the Student Government Association, including class officer positions
Preferred Qualifications
- Sophomore or higher is preferred
