About this role
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Manufacturing Engineering Technician specializing in precision sheet metal fabrication and resistance spot welding to join our engineering team. In this role, you will bridge the gap between design and production by developing robust manufacturing plans, creating flat blanks, and optimizing production workflows.
You will focus heavily on processing thin-gauge stainless steel and galvanized steel (0.024" to 0.075"). You will collaborate closely with the Manufacturing Engineer assigned to support core project teams, support both sustaining and new product development (NPD), and drive continuous process and quality improvements across the shop floor.
This is an hourly role with 40 hours per week and possibility of overtime (Overtime must be approved by a manager or assigned engineer).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manufacturing Process Planning & Programming
· Develop detailed manufacturing plans and sequences of operations for fabrication and welding processes.
· Generate precise flat blanks for CNC laser cutting and punching operations using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
· Create, update, and maintain production routings, backflushing, and pick locations within SAP.
· Participate in design for manufacturability (DFM) reviews to evaluate part geometries, tolerances, and sheet metal fabrication/spot welding feasibility before production release.
Prototyping & Quality Assurance
· Coordinate Fabrication of components and weldments, working directly with shop floor personnel to validate new designs.
· Guide prototype components through the First Article Inspection (FAI) process, ensuring complete compliance with engineering drawings and quality specifications.
· Investigate deviations and support root-cause analysis to implement corrective actions for fabrication or spot welding quality defects (Cosmetic, dimensional, packaging, shipping, etc.).
Continuous Improvement & Operational
Support
· Perform formal time studies and line-balancing exercises to optimize throughput, establish production standards, and reduce waste.
· Identify and execute process and quality improvements utilizing Lean Manufacturing methodologies to enhance efficiency and reduce scrap.
· Provide active technical support to sustaining engineering activities and New Product Development (NPD) launch phases.
· Support Manufacturing Engineer assigned to core cross-functional teams, executing project tasks and deliverables as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have:
Required Education & Experience
· Associate degree in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline; OR equivalent hands-on experience
· Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in a precision sheet metal fabrication environment.
Technical Proficiencies
· Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for 3D modeling and 2D drafting/flat-pattern development.
· Direct working knowledge of sheet metal operations: blanking, laser cutting, punching, deburring, and precision bending (press brake parameters and K-factors).
· Deep understanding of resistance spot welding processes for thin-gauge materials ranging from 0.024" to 0.075", including electrode selection (e.g., managing zinc buildup from galvanized coatings), weld parameters (current, time, pressure), and destructive/non-destructive inspection requirements.
· Proficient in using SAP (or similar enterprise resource planning/ERP software) for routing creation and data management.
· Experience utilizing precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges) for First Article Inspections.
Core Competencies
· Ability to interpret complex engineering blueprints and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
· Strong analytical skills with a proven track record of conducting time studies and process optimization.
· Excellent communication and collaboration skills to act as an effective liaison between engineering teams and shop floor operators.
Physical Requirements & Safety
· Ability to lift and move parts or tooling up to 40 lbs independently.
· Ability to stand, walk, and navigate a manufacturing shop floor environment for extended periods during prototyping and time studies.
· Strictly adhere to facility safety guidelines, including mandatory use of steel-toed boots and safety glasses, as well as other department-specific PPE as required.
