**Position Summary**
The Senior Database \& Data Platform Engineer provides technical leadership for the design, administration, optimization, governance, and modernization of the organization’s enterprise data platforms. This role encompasses Microsoft SQL Server, Azure data services, Databricks Lakehouse, Microsoft Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, Claude, and other approved AI technologies.
The Engineer serves as a technical authority and operational owner, advancing secure and scalable data platforms that enable enterprise analytics, reporting, AI adoption, and digital modernization. The role partners across technology and business teams to strengthen platform reliability, governance, innovation, and the effective use of enterprise data and AI capabilities.
**Responsibilities**

- Design and maintain enterprise data platform architecture supporting operational, analytics, and AI workloads.
- Develop modernization roadmaps for legacy database and data platforms while maintaining business continuity.
- Establish standards for database design, performance, security, availability, scalability, governance, and documentation.
- Evaluate emerging data and AI technologies and recommend future\-state platform capabilities.
- Administer, optimize, and secure Microsoft SQL Server environments, including performance, backup/recovery, patching, upgrades, capacity, and disaster recovery.
- Lead disaster recovery testing, failover validation, production incident response, root cause analysis, and remediation.
- Manage platform reliability, observability, utilization, capacity, and cloud cost optimization.
- Provide technical ownership for Databricks, including Lakehouse architecture, Unity Catalog, workspace governance, compute, jobs, security, and optimization.
- Support analytics, reporting, machine learning, and AI initiatives through governed, trusted enterprise data.
- Define and support standards for data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, integration, ETL/ELT, and data movement.
- Oversee integrations across business systems, cloud services, SQL platforms, analytics environments, and AI services.
- Plan and execute data migrations, including validation, cutover, rollback, and transition activities.
- Establish data governance practices covering classification, retention, lineage, quality, stewardship, metadata, access, and audit readiness.
- Partner with business, security, legal, and technology stakeholders to strengthen data ownership, accountability, privacy, and compliance.
- Identify, evaluate, prioritize, and implement practical enterprise AI use cases with business and technology leaders.
- Support adoption and implementation of enterprise AI platforms, including Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and related data services.
- Design governed data pipelines and integration patterns supporting AI, advanced analytics, retrieval\-augmented generation, enterprise search, grounding, and model integration.
- Establish AI security, privacy, access control, monitoring, data\-loss prevention, records management, evaluation, and human\-oversight practices.
- Support AI pilots and production implementations through adoption planning, documentation, training, monitoring, and value realization.
- Evaluate AI services, models, vendors, licensing, integration requirements, operational risks, and costs.
- Monitor production AI solutions for reliability, data quality, usage, and supportability, coordinating remediation as needed.
- Provide technical leadership, architecture guidance, documentation, knowledge transfer, and mentoring across IT and data teams.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, application development, security, analytics, and business teams on architecture, strategic planning, change management, and incident response.
- Support vendor evaluation, contract review, service oversight, and technology selection.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**

- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, information systems, data management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ten or more years of experience supporting enterprise database or data platforms, preferably in insurance or another regulated industry; five or more years of hands\-on Microsoft SQL Server administration and engineering experience in production environments
- Experience designing, implementing, administering, and modernizing cloud\-based data platforms, including Microsoft Azure and Azure Databricks; certifications in Microsoft Azure, SQL Server, Databricks, or AI\-related
- Experience supporting enterprise AI adoption, governance, implementation, and AI\-enabled business solutions, including transitioning solutions from pilot to governed production use
- Knowledge of SQL Server administration, performance tuning, troubleshooting, backup and recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, patching, and lifecycle management; knowledge of Azure data services, Azure SQL, Databricks, Lakehouse architecture, Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, data warehousing, data modeling, ETL/ELT, and data integration patterns
- Knowledge of data security, identity and access management, governance, monitoring, automation, and cataloging, including Microsoft Purview or comparable platforms
- Proficiency with SQL scripting and automation using PowerShell, Python, or comparable tools
- Knowledge of generative AI, including large language models, grounding, retrieval\-augmented generation, prompt design, evaluation, responsible AI, and secure enterprise integration
- Experience with enterprise AI platforms and services such as Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Azure OpenAI, AI Search, and model APIs
- Experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Power BI, or comparable data and analytics services
