Deputy Director of Information Technology
Boone County, Missouri
Boone County is seeking an experienced technology leader to serve as Deputy Director of Information Technology. This is a senior leadership position responsible for supporting the Director in the strategic direction, administration, and day-to-day operations of the County’s technology services.
As second in command of the department, the Deputy Director plays a key role in shaping the County’s technology strategy, leading managers and major initiatives, overseeing critical support functions, and ensuring reliable, secure, and effective technology services across County government. This position serves as Director in their absence.
What You’ll Do
In this role, you will:
- Supervise managers responsible for Information Technology, GIS, Mail Services, and Facilities Security.
- Lead and support departmental operations, staffing, payroll, budgeting, personnel administration, contracts, and major technology projects.
- Partner closely with the Director on strategic planning, technology priorities, vendor relations, contract negotiations, and organizational initiatives.
- Work with County leadership to identify technology needs, establish priorities, evaluate system capacity, and plan future equipment and technology investments.
- Help establish and maintain standards for computer hardware, software, systems, and technology services.
- Oversee the County’s GIS operations, including GIS data quality, web services, programming, and related centralized services.
- Provide leadership for Mail Services operations serving County facilities.
- Oversee Facilities Security technology, including electronic access control, alarms, and video security systems.
- Manage complex projects and help ensure departmental goals and service expectations are met.
- Build strong working relationships with County departments, vendors, employees, and members of the public.

The successful candidate will bring strong leadership skills along with broad knowledge of modern information technology operations. We are looking for someone who can balance strategic thinking with the practical demands of managing people, projects, budgets, and critical technology services.
Strong candidates will have experience with areas such as:
- IT leadership and project management
- Application development and enterprise systems
- Networks, servers, telecommunications, and desktop technologies
- Relational databases and cloud-based solutions
- Website and content management technologies
- GIS principles and systems
- Information security and technology compliance
- Budgeting, contracts, procurement, and vendor management
- Hiring, developing, supervising, and evaluating staff
- Large-scale organizational or technology initiatives
The position requires strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to establish productive working relationships across departments and with the public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, Administration, or a closely related field
- Five years of information technology services experience
- Personnel management experience, preferably in a government environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Business or Public Administration
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a closely related field
- Five years of personnel management experience, preferably in government
Additional Requirements
This position works primarily in a professional office environment and requires the ability to travel between County locations. A valid ability to operate a vehicle in accordance with County vehicle policies is required.
