Job Summary
BNY is seeking a Java Full Stack Developer to join the Derivatives Technology team. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building new applications and workflows supporting Middle Office derivatives and OTC valuation.
The team is actively developing a new product with key deliverables targeted for the end of Q1, 2027. This is not a support, migration, or uplift role. The engineer will be expected to contribute significant new code across both the backend and frontend, working approximately 50/50 across Java and Angular/React.
Strong Java engineering experience is the priority.
This is an initial 6-month contract based in New York City at the World Trade Center, 4 days onsite per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Full Stack Development: Design and develop new applications and workflows using Java/Spring Boot and Angular or React, contributing hands-on across both backend and frontend development.
- Backend Engineering: Build scalable Java 17+ services, REST APIs, microservices, and message-driven applications supporting valuation and Middle Office workflows.
- Messaging & Integration: Develop integrations and asynchronous workflows using technologies such as Kafka and MQ, including connections with internal and external services.
- Front-End Development: Build modern user-facing functionality using Angular or React while integrating front-end components with backend services and workflows.
- Database Development: Work with Oracle and SQL to develop queries, support application data requirements, and troubleshoot data-related issues.
- New Product Development: Contribute to a new product and workflow platform, translating business requirements into production-ready functionality rather than primarily supporting or modernizing existing applications.
- AI-Assisted Engineering: Use AI engineering tools such as Claude, Codex, Windsurf, or similar tools to accelerate development, testing, and engineering productivity.
- Testing & Code Quality: Develop unit tests, review code, and maintain strong engineering standards throughout the development lifecycle.
- CI/CD & Deployment: Support automated build, testing, deployment, and release processes using modern CI/CD and DevOps practices.
- Business Partnership: Work with engineering, Product, and Middle Office stakeholders to understand business workflows and translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional hands-on software engineering and coding experience
- Strong Java 17+ development experience
- Strong experience with Spring / Spring Boot
- Full-stack development experience with Angular; strong React experience can also be considered
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Codex, Windsurf, or equivalent
- Experience building new applications, products, or workflows, rather than primarily supporting, migrating, or upgrading existing systems
- Experience with Kafka and/or MQ and message-driven applications
- Strong Oracle and SQL experience, including writing and troubleshooting SQL queries
- Experience building microservices, REST APIs, and application integrations
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern software development practices
- Strong understanding of requirements, application workflows, unit testing, and code review
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline
Preferred Experience
- Derivatives, OTC valuation, pricing, or calculation-intensive application experience
- Financial services, capital markets, securities, or Middle Office technology experience
- Experience integrating pricing, calculation, or other external service providers
- Cloud platforms, containerization, and modern DevOps practices
- Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to other engineers
- Ability to quickly learn derivatives data, securities workflows, and end-to-end Middle Office processes
Why Join Us
This is an opportunity to join BNY's Derivatives Technology organization during an active product build and contribute directly to new application development. The Developer will work alongside an established development team building new workflows from the ground up, with significant hands-on ownership across Java and modern front-end development.
The environment also actively incorporates AI-assisted engineering tools into the development process.
