**About the Role**

------------------

The **Director, Software Engineering** will lead Birdi's software engineering team while driving the architecture and development of a greenfield, AI\-powered care platform.

This role combines **people leadership, technical strategy, architecture, and hands\-on engineering expertise**. You'll lead and develop software engineers, architect scalable backend systems using **Golang (Go)**, guide database strategy across SQL Server and PostgreSQL, and establish engineering standards around testing, code quality, and deployment.

You'll also play a key role in defining how Birdi incorporates **AI\-assisted and agentic development tools** into the software development lifecycle. You'll evaluate emerging AI technologies, including tools such as Claude Code and Codex, and guide their thoughtful adoption across the engineering team.

Working closely with Product, Design, and organizational leadership, you'll help translate business goals into technical strategy while ensuring Birdi's solutions meet the reliability, scalability, security, and compliance expectations of healthcare technology.

**What You'll Do**

### **Lead the Engineering Team**

• Lead, mentor, and develop a high\-performing team of software engineers.
• Establish clear engineering expectations, development practices, and technical standards.
• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
• Balance strategic leadership with hands\-on technical involvement where needed.
• Help grow the technical capabilities of the engineering organization as Birdi's platform evolves.

### **Build a Greenfield AI\-Powered Care Platform**

• Lead the development of Birdi's new AI\-powered care platform from the ground up.
• Architect and implement scalable backend systems using **Golang (Go)**.
• Establish architectural standards that support reliability, maintainability, performance, and long\-term scalability.
• Guide technical decisions throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Leadership to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.

### **Advance AI\-Assisted Engineering**

• Evaluate AI\-enabled and agentic development tools for engineering use cases.
• Test and implement tools such as Claude Code, Codex, and similar technologies.
• Develop standards and best practices for incorporating AI into software engineering workflows.
• Lead adoption of AI\-assisted development practices across the engineering team.
• Identify opportunities to use AI to improve developer productivity, software quality, and delivery.

### **Own Architecture \& Data Strategy**

• Guide database design, architecture, optimization, and management across **SQL Server and PostgreSQL**.
• Develop scalable solutions capable of supporting complex healthcare workflows.
• Establish best practices for software testing, code quality, and deployment.
• Ensure technical decisions balance immediate product needs with long\-term platform scalability.
• Provide hands\-on technical and architectural guidance when solving complex engineering challenges.

### **Drive Engineering Excellence**

• Establish and continuously improve development standards and engineering practices.
• Promote strong testing and quality assurance throughout the development lifecycle.
• Build effective development and deployment processes that support reliable software delivery.
• Champion continuous improvement across engineering workflows, tools, and practices.
• Help the team evaluate new technologies based on business value, scalability, and long\-term maintainability.

### **Collaborate Across the Business**

• Partner closely with Product, Design, and Leadership to align technical direction with business objectives.
• Translate complex technical concepts and decisions for non\-technical stakeholders.
• Help prioritize technical investments based on product strategy and organizational needs.
• Build collaborative relationships across teams to ensure successful product delivery.

### **Build for Healthcare**

• Ensure solutions meet healthcare expectations for reliability, scalability, security, and compliance.
• Develop technology with **HIPAA and SOC 2 requirements** in mind.
• Help navigate the technical considerations associated with implementing AI\-enabled technologies in a healthcare environment.
• Partner across the organization to ensure technical solutions meet operational and business requirements.

**Required Qualifications**

### **Education \& Experience**

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum of **8 years of relevant software engineering experience**.
• Proven experience leading and growing software engineering teams.
• Demonstrated people leadership experience.
• Proven track record architecting and delivering complex, scalable software systems.
• Experience working within Agile development environments.
• Ability to successfully balance engineering leadership with hands\-on technical responsibilities.

### **Technical Expertise**

• Strong development experience with **Golang (Go)**.
• Deep understanding of database systems, architecture, and optimization.
• Experience working with **SQL Server and PostgreSQL**.
• Strong foundation in software testing and quality assurance practices.
• Experience with AI\-enabled platforms and agentic technologies.
• Experience evaluating or implementing AI development tools within software engineering environments.
• Ability to architect scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend systems.
• Strong understanding of modern software development and deployment practices.

**Preferred Qualifications**

**Work Environment**
