Job description

About this role

Senior Accountant, Billing & Systems Best Portable Toilets (BPT) | Des Moines, IA | Full-Time | On-Site | Exempt

About Us

Best Portable Toilets is a growing portable sanitation and restroom rental company based in Des Moines, with operations in Iowa, the Kansas City metro, and Oklahoma, and more markets on the way. We're a hands-on, operations-focused team, and our finance group is small enough that your work will make a visible difference.

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Accountant who enjoys solving billing problems and understanding how systems fit together. About half of this role is complex customer billing and serving as our finance team's go-to expert in ServiceCore and its integration with QuickBooks Online. The other half covers sales and use tax, fixed assets, accounts payable, accruals, and month-end reconciliations.

You'll report to the Accounting Manager, and there is room to grow into broader accounting leadership.

What You'll Do

  • Own complex and non-standard billing: data-center and contract sites, restroom trailers, large events, multi-location accounts, and customers with negotiated pricing or PO/portal requirements
  • Set up customers, sites, rate tables, and billing rules in ServiceCore, and resolve billing exceptions with Customer Service, Sales, and Operations
  • Find and recover missed or unbilled charges by comparing contracts, service activity, and invoices
  • Reconcile ServiceCore billing, A/R, and sales tax to QuickBooks Online each month, and trace recurring sync errors to their root cause
  • Administer multi-state sales and use tax, including tax codes, exemption certificates, filings, and new-branch registrations
  • Maintain the fixed asset register for units, trailers, trucks, and equipment across all branches
  • Process accounts payable, payment runs, vendor records, card reconciliations, and 1099s
  • Prepare monthly accruals, journal entries, and assigned balance sheet reconciliations
  • Document procedures and help implement process improvements, including the AI-assisted tools BPT is adopting

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required); CPA or progress toward CPA preferred
  • About 3–5 years of accounting experience, either as a public accounting Senior/Senior Associate or in full-cycle accounting at a multi-location service, construction, equipment rental, logistics, or similar business
  • The ability to prepare journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations independently
  • A track record of solving tough billing or system problems and learning new software deeply
  • Experience working with operational teams such as dispatch, drivers, or field managers
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and month-end close; experience with multi-state sales tax and fixed assets, or the ability to learn them quickly
  • QuickBooks Online experience (or the ability to pick it up quickly) and strong Excel skills; ServiceCore or similar field-service/rental billing software is a plus

You'll Do Well Here If You…

  • Like fixing the root cause instead of patching symptoms
  • Can explain accounting clearly to people outside finance
  • Are comfortable in a blue-collar, high-accountability environment
  • Want room to grow
