About this role
POSITION: Communications & Marketing Manager
STRUCTURE: Full-time, salaried, exempt. Reports to the Director of Communications.
LOCATION
Richmond, VA (Innsbrook). Time in the office is expected, as well as a presence at programs and events taking place across the Greater Richmond area.
ABOUT ASCV
The Autism Society of Central Virginia (ASCV) supports, empowers, and builds connections to improve the lives of all in our local autism community. We serve autistic individuals, families, caregivers, and professionals through social and recreational programs, support groups, educational opportunities, advocacy, scholarships, and community resources.
It’s a big moment to join us: our new Autism Community Hub opens in 2027, and our programs and partnerships keep growing. This role will help more people understand, connect with, and support ASCV’s work.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Communications & Marketing Manager proactively plans and executes engaging, audience-focused marketing campaigns and communications that advance ASCV's mission, programs, events, and community engagement. This role combines strong writing and storytelling skills with creative thinking, digital communications, project management, and the ability to evaluate results and improve effectiveness.
Working collaboratively across teams, you'll take ownership of content development, social media, email marketing, and campaign coordination, ensuring communications are timely, compelling, and aligned with organizational priorities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Campaign Planning and Coordination
- Develop and execute campaign plans for signature fundraising events—including the 5K & Family Fun Day, RVA Duck Fest, Gala, and Golf Tournament—as well as programs, membership, community-led fundraisers, and initiatives such as Autism Acceptance Month.
- Partner with staff to define audiences, messaging, promotional materials, channels, and timelines within agreed organizational priorities.
- Maintain the communications calendar, coordinate staff input and approvals, and identify competing demands early.
- Coordinate audience targeting and segmentation with database owners.
- Evaluate campaign results, investigate gaps, and recommend improvements to outreach.
Content Development and Storytelling
- Write and edit audience-focused content for email, social media, websites, print materials, and publications.
- Build familiarity with ASCV’s programs and community through program attendance, staff collaboration, and interviews. Draw on participant experiences, program information, and data to tell impact stories while respecting consent, privacy, individual preferences, and ASCV’s voice.
- Prepare copy and briefs for the Creative Manager, utilize Canva and brand templates for routine assets, and coordinate materials through completion.
- Gather and organize evergreen stories, photographs, and other content in collaboration with staff and outside contributors.
Social Media Ownership and Engagement
- Own ASCV’s social media calendar, content planning, and publishing cadence across platforms. Work with the Program Communications Manager and other staff to identify content opportunities and coordinate contributions, balancing program promotion, events, impact stories, and community engagement.
- Write content and edit or adapt staff contributions. Schedule, publish, and monitor posts, including simple Reels and Stories using available photos and video clips.
- Use performance data and audience feedback to test improvements to messaging, timing, and content formats.
- Engage with followers, respond to or route inquiries within approved guidelines, and share relevant community, partner, and sponsor content.
Email and Website Communications
- Plan, build, test, and send newsletters and targeted email campaigns, coordinating content, audience segmentation, and scheduling with relevant staff.
- Monitor email performance, including open rates, clicks, and engagement, and recommend improvements to content, design, and delivery.
- Manage ongoing website content updates, ensuring program information, campaign pages, event promotion, and other key information are accurate, current, and easy to navigate.
- Identify opportunities to improve website content, organization, and user experience, working with staff and external partners as needed.
PR Support and Community Visibility
- Identify story opportunities and prepare releases and supporting materials as assigned.
- Maintain community calendar listings and coordinate information and timing with communications leadership and PR contractors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field, plus three or more years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, professional experience, and demonstrated work may also be considered.
- Strong writing and editing skills, including audience-focused stories and campaign content.
- Experience developing campaign plans and carrying work through production, publication, and evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to use audience insights and basic analytics to improve content and campaigns, anticipate needs, and carry recommendations through implementation.
- Working knowledge of Canva and the ability to create simple social media videos or Reels from existing photos and clips.
- Experience building and sending email campaigns, publishing social content, and updating websites, with the ability to learn new platforms.
- Strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage deadlines and coordinate contributions independently using project management tools such as Monday.com.
- Creative curiosity, collaborative judgment, and a willingness to learn about the people and programs behind the content.
- Commitment to accessible, respectful communications that reflect autistic voices and the diversity of our community.
Experience in nonprofit or another mission-driven setting and familiarity with platforms such as WordPress, Mindbody, Bloomerang, and RunSignup/TicketSignup are helpful. Text-message communications, photography, and advanced design or video skills are a plus, but not required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role includes required office time, local travel, and some evening or weekend attendance at programs and signature events to gather content and build community familiarity. Scheduling and adjustments are coordinated with the Director of Communications.
