Atlas Oil — Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting

======================================================

Position Summary

--------------------

The Senior Accountant will join Atlas Oil’s Financial Reporting team and play a key role in preparing accurate, timely, and complete financial information for the company’s oil and gas trading business.

This position is responsible for core financial reporting activities, account reconciliations, month-end and quarter-end close support, and the ongoing integrity of accounting data across the company’s enterprise resource planning and energy trading and risk management systems.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting and financial reporting skills with experience in the oil and gas, energy, commodities, or trading environment and will help support Atlas Oil’s reporting and control objectives. Experience working with an ETRM platform and public accounting or public audit experience is required. A CPA license or active pursuit of the CPA is a plus.

Responsibilities

--------------------

  • Own and perform recurring financial reporting activities, including preparation and review of financial statements, reporting schedules, management reporting, and supporting analyses.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain balance sheet account reconciliations, including investigation and resolution of reconciling items.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes in accordance with established deadlines and internal controls.
  • Analyze account balances, journal entries, accruals, reserves, and period-over-period variances; identify unusual activity and recommend appropriate corrections.
  • Reconcile activity between the general ledger, subledgers, bank accounts, operational systems, and ETRM platforms.
  • Partner with Front Office, Operations, Treasury, Risk, Settlements, Tax, and other cross-functional teams to resolve accounting and reporting issues.
  • Review trading and settlement-related activity for completeness, accuracy, and proper accounting treatment.
  • Support accounting for physical and financial commodity transactions, inventory, derivatives, mark-to-market activity, realized and unrealized gains and losses, and related settlements, as applicable.
  • Prepare audit schedules and respond to requests from external auditors, internal stakeholders, and management.
  • Support the design, documentation, and execution of internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting, reconciliation, and close processes through standardization, automation, and stronger data controls.
  • Assist with implementation, enhancement, and testing of accounting and ETRM system functionality.
  • Maintain clear and well-organized documentation supporting financial reporting conclusions, reconciliations, and control performance.
  • Perform other accounting and financial reporting responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

---------------------------

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5 or more years of progressive accounting experience, including financial reporting and account reconciliations.
  • Experience in public accounting or public audit, preferably serving energy, oil and gas, commodities, or trading clients.
  • Hands-on experience with an ETRM system and an understanding of how trading, settlement, and operational data flows into the general ledger.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Demonstrated experience with month-end and quarter-end close activities.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to analyze large data sets and build effective reconciliation and reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

----------------------------

  • CPA license or active pursuit of the CPA designation.
  • Experience with oil and gas, energy, commodities, or physical and financial trading businesses.
  • Experience with ETRM platforms such as RightAngle or similar systems.
  • Experience with ERP systems, financial reporting tools, and data automation solutions.
  • Knowledge of commodity derivatives, hedge accounting, inventory accounting, revenue recognition, or fair value accounting.
  • Experience supporting external audits, internal audits, SOX compliance, or other internal control programs.

Key Competencies

--------------------

  • Technical accounting: Applies accounting standards accurately and exercises sound professional judgment.
  • Reconciliation ownership: Follows issues through to resolution and maintains complete supporting documentation.
  • Business partnership: Builds effective relationships across Accounting, Operations, Treasury, Risk, Settlements, and Trading.
  • Systems aptitude: Understands system-generated accounting data and can investigate issues across multiple platforms.
  • Continuous improvement: Looks for practical ways to improve close, reporting, and reconciliation processes.
  • Integrity and accountability: Takes ownership of results and maintains a high standard of accuracy and confidentiality.

Success in This Role

------------------------

Success at Atlas Oil will be measured by the timely and accurate completion of financial reporting and close deliverables, the quality and completeness of account reconciliations, effective resolution of ETRM-to-general-ledger issues, strong audit support, and continued improvement in the reliability and efficiency of financial reporting processes.
