About this role

About Us

Liquid Instruments builds next-generation test and measurement technology for engineers and scientists pushing the boundaries of discovery.

Our founders came out of the Australian National University, with research roots tied to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Today, we use deep expertise in high-speed digital signal processing to build software-defined test and measurement platforms. One reconfigurable FPGA-based device replaces racks of traditional lab equipment, delivering flexibility, performance, and cost efficiency.

We’re a growing, venture-backed company with teams in San Diego, California, and Canberra, Australia. Our culture is collaborative and technically curious, and it values ownership, clarity, and impact across time zones.

The Role

You’ll own revenue recognition and related accounting across our products and subscriptions and help build the systems that support our growth. Day to day, that means complex invoicing, order terms and conditions, billing review, ASC 606 revenue recognition, and reconciliations. You’ll have a solid understanding of accounting and GAAP compliance and play close attention to detail.

You’ll support the month-end close and work with Sales and Operations to make sure what we sell is accounted for correctly.

The Revenue Accountant will report to the Accounting Controller and work on-site in our Del Mar office.

What You’ll Do* Recognize revenue under US GAAP (ASC 606): identify performance obligations, determine transaction price, and allocate consideration across hardware, software, subscriptions, and warranties

  • Account for hardware-specific items: shipment and delivery terms, acceptance provisions, returns and RMAs, warranties, and channel/distributor arrangements
  • Prepare monthly revenue, deferred revenue, and contract asset/liability entries and reconciliations
  • Support inventory and COGS accounting, including revenue-to-cost-of-sales matching on shipments
  • Support month-end close: account reconciliations, AR aging review, revenue entries, and supporting schedules with variance analysis and flux commentary
  • Prepare and review journal entries and customer transactions across our ERP, website, CRM, and IMS
  • Work cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, Product, Billing, and Operations on new offerings, non-standard terms, promotions, pricing changes, and operational impacts on revenue
  • Optimize our systems by building, documenting, and improving revenue controls and workflows, and automate as the company scales
  • Run accounts receivable: invoicing, payment application, collections, and account research
  • Resolve invoicing, payment, and balance issues before they escalate
  • Record electronic payment deposits accurately and post them on time in our ERP
  • Follow up with customers on payments, balances, portal applications, and discrepancies, with clear documentation and a professional tone
  • Communicate revenue impacts clearly to non-accounting partners and influence business decisions with a balanced technical and operational perspective
  • Keep internal and external stakeholders informed on billing, payments, account status, and reporting
  • Serve as a subject matter expert within the revenue organization and a trusted partner to other departmental teams
  • Provide backup assistance to expense management and sales tax activities

What We’re Looking For* Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

  • 3+ years of revenue accounting experience, ideally in technology or software-defined services
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and ASC 606 (and IFRS 15 for international entities)
  • ERP/accounting system experience (we use Xero) and advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills
  • Sharp attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-moving environment
  • Clear, professional communication with customers, vendors, and teammates, including the ability to explain accounting to non-finance colleagues
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools to work more efficiently

Nice to Have* CPA or CPA-eligible

  • Startup, high-growth, or public accounting experience serving tech clients
  • Experience with billing and revenue tools like Stripe

About You* You’re reliable and own your daily responsibilities.

  • You’re adaptable and comfortable in a small team with shifting priorities.
  • You’re curious about why problems happen and drive to long-term resolution.
  • You take projects from idea to completion.

What We Offer* Medical and dental insurance, with 100% of employee premiums paid

  • Equity in Liquid Instruments
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Four weeks of paid vacation, plus sick time and holidays
  • Laptop for work use
  • Venture-backed startup experience

Salary

$85,000 – $100,000 annually
