ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Senior Commodity Manager, Mechanical at Biofire, you will play a pivotal role in building the mechanical supply base that carries our product from low-rate initial production (LRIP) into full-rate production.

You will own the mechanical commodity strategy across machining, injection molding, metal injection molding (MIM), and metals fabrication — qualifying suppliers, driving cost out of the bill of materials, de-risking single-source exposure, and formalizing the commercial agreements that will carry Biofire through its next phase of growth.

We are looking for someone who pairs strong mechanical manufacturing process knowledge with pragmatic system-building instincts and the ability to influence engineering, quality, and production partners without direct authority, to help our supply chain team scale procurement infrastructure from scratch.

To succeed you will need to be able to stand up a supplier qualification framework, a dual-sourcing roadmap, and formal commercial agreements within your first six months, all while keeping current production supply uninterrupted.

You will need to be a pragmatic, hands-on system builder who is eager to take a nascent, LRIP-stage mechanical supply base and turn it into a qualified, cost-optimized, and resilient supply chain capable of supporting Biofire’s production ramp. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Day-to-day responsibilities of the role will include:

• Design and implement a supplier qualification framework (PPAP, first-article inspection, capacity audits) calibrated by commodity type, and drive Biofire’s mechanical supplier base through qualification for full-rate production;
• Drive a significant reduction in mechanical BOM cost through DFX-driven process conversions (e.g., machined-to-molded), volume-based renegotiation, competitive bidding, and improved commercial terms, tracked in a supplier-confirmed savings tracker;
• Evaluate the full mechanical parts portfolio to identify single-source risk, build a prioritized dual-sourcing roadmap, and drive qualification of second sources based on risk, business impact, and total cost of ownership;
• Negotiate and formalize MSAs and/or stocking agreements with mechanical suppliers covering pricing, payment terms, lead-time commitments, and quality expectations, delivering term sheets ready for leadership and legal approval;
• Own supply continuity through the production ramp — proactively monitor supplier capacity, translate production schedules into supplier demand signals, and prevent line-down events due to preventable mechanical supply gaps;
• Participate actively in DFX design reviews alongside mechanical engineering, applying process knowledge across MIM, injection molding, machining, and metals fabrication to flag manufacturability, cost, and quality risks before parts are released for sourcing;
• Build and maintain a mechanical supply chain roadmap aligned to Biofire’s product roadmap and production ramp plan, anticipating supplier capacity constraints and category-specific market dynamics;
• Coach and develop buyers on supplier capability assessment, holistic quote evaluation, and scorecard input, building capability across the broader procurement team.

• Strong working knowledge of mechanical manufacturing processes (MIM, injection molding, machining, and metals fabrication) sufficient to recognize process-conversion and cost-saving opportunities, assess supplier capability fit, and interpret engineering drawings independently
• Proven experience building supplier qualification frameworks (PPAP, FAI, capacity and quality audits) from scratch, ideally in an environment without existing procurement infrastructure
• Track record of driving measurable BOM cost reduction through DFX collaboration, should-cost modeling, and commercial negotiation
• Experience developing dual-sourcing strategies and managing second-source qualification based on risk, total cost of ownership, and supplier/tooling considerations
• Skilled in negotiating commercial agreements (MSAs, stocking agreements) covering pricing, lead time, stocking, and quality terms
• Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functionally — engineering, quality, and production — without direct authority, and to coach and mentor buyers
• Experience supporting hardware products through the transition from low-rate to full-rate production, ideally in a regulated or highly engineered industry (aerospace, defense, medical device, automotive, or firearms)
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, supply chain, or a related field (or equivalent experience), plus several years of experience in mechanical commodity management or strategic sourcing

The compensation range for this role is $165,000 - $180,000 annual salary + stock options + benefits.

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. LOCATION

• Colorado (Broomfield HQ) – Primarily on-site: This is a full-time, salaried role based in our dog-friendly, state-of-the-art headquarters located between Boulder and Denver. The team regularly engages in collaborative, in-person sessions at our vibrant office space, with flexibility to work from home as needed.
