About this role

Employer-provided description, formatted for easier reading.

Amazon Software Builder Experience (ASBX), started in 2022, is working to make Amazon the best place to build software. Every day, hundreds of thousands of Amazon software builders rely on us for the tools they build with, and for the technology, training, and community behind them. We are at an inflection point as builders shift from performing every step of software development to supervising agents that perform the steps.

We own the experience that makes this transition work, empowering builders to apply their knowledge and expertise to invent more for customers.

The Role

We are seeking a Director of Software Development to lead Builder Operations (“Builder Ops”), the organization that builds the technology, tools, and services Amazon teams use to practice DevOps for all of Amazon (AWS, Retail, Devices, and beyond): incident management, change management in production, and the feedback loops that turn operational learnings into better software.

This team is leading the charge to bring agentic operations to Amazon, and this leader will define how humans and agents run production together. Few engineering roles anywhere combine this scope, this scale, and this moment. Builder Ops has built one of the largest incident-management and DevOps platforms in the industry, with the majority of that work now resolved faster, and safely, using AI.

The strategic priority this leader owns is the shift to agentic operations: defining how humans and agents operate together at Amazon's safety bar, at dramatically higher speed, while maintaining the reliability builders and customers depend on. This is an established organization that owns tools and services used by virtually every builder at Amazon.

Key job responsibilities ● Own the vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap for Builder Ops, connecting it to builder impact: code quality, reliability, security, developer productivity, and the shift to agent-supervised development. ● Own Amazon's incident management, change management, and operational-safety capabilities across all regions.

● Drive agentic operations, defining how AI agents and human operators collaborate at Amazon's safety bar at machine-speed. ● Lead and grow a multi-team engineering organization: develop leaders, attract Principal Engineers, and build the leadership bench. ● Drive product quality and operational excellence end to end while accelerating innovation velocity.

● Partner across ASBX and Amazon to align execution with strategy and orchestrate shared solutions. ● Influence strategy and technical direction at the most senior levels of the company through clear written narrative and data; briefs at CEO-level reviews.

● Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience. ● 10+ years of software development experience, including architecting fault-tolerant, highly available systems at scale. ● 5+ years managing people, with 3+ years managing multiple managers or teams.

● Experience developing long-term technical vision and strategy and influencing leadership decisions. ● Experience delivering large-scale, customer-facing products on scalable architecture.

● Master's or PhD in Computer Science or Engineering, with 10+ years of relevant experience. ● A leadership position on a team delivering solutions at Amazon or industry scale. ● Proven track record of hiring world-class talent and developing engineering leaders.

● Excellent written and verbal communication. ● Deep experience in SRE, DevOps, incident management, or operational excellence at high scale. ● Experience building or leading agentic/AI-driven operations platforms, balancing speed and safety in regulated environments.
